Meet Ava Lauren Grayson | Writer/Director & Founder of Hip Librarian Productions

We had the good fortune of connecting with Ava Lauren Grayson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ava Lauren, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I started Hip Librarian Productions to address a gap in the industry. Working both in publishing as a writer and editor and in film as a director, I realized that many authors and publishers who now use social media (TikTok, IG, and YouTube) to promote book releases don’t use high quality, original cinematic footage to showcase the authors’ work visually. So I got thinking and… Hip Librarian Productions was born. With HLP, we create original cinematic book trailers, book teasers, and book commercials for authors, publishing companies, and book-related products. We work closely with our clients to adapt original written material into high concept, striking visuals that will attract the Gen-Z audience and appeal to viewers just like a Hollywood film trailer.

What should our readers know about your business?
Hip Librarian Productions is one of the only film companies that specializes in adapting, filming, and producing original trailer content based on books for authors and publishers to use as social media promotion. We are proud to produce our trailers for a low cost in order to work with writers and companies with any budget while still providing high-quality visuals. HLP is a female-owned company and is based in Los Angeles. We love working with authors, screenwriters, graphic novelists, book-related product companies, and many more creatives of various genres and for all age ranges who need custom visuals to showcase their written work on screen. Our process begins with reading the writer’s material, adapting it into a trailer script, then going into pre-production, production, and post, similar to a short film or feature. We work quickly and efficiently and provide a short turnaround time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Bookstores bookstores bookstores. LA has some of the most beautiful bookstores from The Last Bookstore to Once Upon a Time Bookstore. Then we would definitely have to hit up a cafe. My favorites are Tepito Coffee in Vroman’s and Republik Coffee. And to end off the night, I would take my friends to Regal LA Live to catch a film!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a huge shoutout to my family–my mom and my sister for helping me load endless amounts of equipment and props into my car, for always reading my stories, for talking through plot with me, for coming to every screening, and for never saying no to assisting me with a photoshoot. They are the best team a writer/director could ask for.
