Meet Marin Griffith | Mixed Media Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Marin Griffith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Marin, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
Creativity and making art is not constant and to make good work it can’t be. We all need rest and breaks from making even if it’s the thing we love the most.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I was lucky to grow up in a creative family, I like to think we were all inspired by each other. I remember from a very young age drawing a flower everyday with my mom, and with all that practice I got pretty good at making flowers and I decided I wanted to draw other things as well, it started my passion for art making. Although I was around the support of other artists, it is never easy. Being creative, working consistently, making and producing art is not easy but its absolutely worth it. My art practice now has manifested into a few of my interests. With the combination of sewing, painting and print making my work represents pattern, desire, diaspora, and a meditation on images that convey our broad and bold capacity of life. I work with bright colors, bold shapes and high contrast visuals to place against the concepts of sentiment, collectivity and care. i have always worked in multiple mediums but my interdisciplinary interest really started from disliking a painting I made, cutting it up, sewing it back together, and now I make work that sits somewhere between textile and painting.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have fortunately worked at some great places in Providence and I grew up in a family owned small business so its important to me that i support my community. I would start with my favorite “stuff” stores. Records from Olympic Records, nick-nacks from POP, and vintage clothes from The Vault Collective and Nostalgia Antiques. Food from Gift Horse and coffee from Rise and Shine Coffee. And lastly, late night games at the Barcade!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am really grateful for the inspiration and work ethic my dad has taught me, the generosity and brilliance of my sister, and the integrity I learned from my mother. And the story telling of Toni Morrison I hold close to me.
