Meet Connor Clement | Rapper, Songwriter and Entrepreneur

We had the good fortune of connecting with Connor Clement and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Connor, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I honestly felt like I had to. I think most creatives can relate to that, it’s like there’s a little voice deep inside your gut that almost forces you to create. I have no idea if that’s ego or your spirit or what – but mine was strong, I remember writing songs as a 5-year-old and singing them so much my family would tell me to shut up haha. So I always knew I had to pursue music, I just had to create a sustainable way of living out that dream and those ideas. The same goes for my business/investing interests. I’ve been fascinated with business since I was about 12, I’ve always felt so much more passionate and connected to something when I’m responsible for the outcome and the image and brand. It’s the only way I’ve been able to get my brain to slow down and focus. Business is my passion, building and creating is my dream and I’m working on marrying the two.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve been making music seriously for about 5 years, and I’ve begun to see success over the past year and a half. Personally, I think my perspective is what truly helps me achieve a distinct sound. I will never claim that my music is fantastic, or better than my contemporaries since music is about as subjective as you can get, but where I strive to find my differentiator is in how I tell my story. I enjoy focusing on the small parts of life, the ones that I truly find interesting and insightful on a day-to-day basis and then I lean into those energies. This is a large step from where I was when I first began my music journey, and why I believe I’ve started to see more success. Before this new way of writing, I had always struggled because I was saying things I THOUGHT a rapper would say, and it took about 3 years of writing to find my voice. My newest songs are the ones I’m truly excited for, the EP is called “Pedestal” – and it’s about the journey of my ego. The beginning is brash and bold but as the songs progress, it shows maturation, nuance, and reflection. It’s like if you could bundle up your 20s into a clean little package. There’s love, loss, anger, defeat, and success all wrapped into one album. I want the world to know that I’m always going to be authentically myself, and there are different parts of myself that I’m not afraid to explore, and I hope that my vulnerability and truth will resonate.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Let’s say they get in on a Friday night, in the summer I’m taking them to a Mariners game and if we have enough $17 beers, we might roll over into Cowgirls after. To shake the beers off the next morning, I’m taking them to Blue Star cafe or Julias and grabbing some brunch, then we are mobbing around the city checking out Pike because it’s actually really fun. To finish the day up, Seattle has amazing life music so we could swing by Nuemos, and then grab some late-night Happy Hour in Ballard at Matador to wind the night down.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My parents 1000%. I’m extremely fortunate to have them in my life, they have allowed and empowered me to pursue almost anything I have wanted, even when it’s been misguided. They have always had my back and my best interests at heart, and I truly wouldn’t be where I am today without them.
