We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Marks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alex, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue an artistic career to follow in my fathers footsteps! Growing up in a Mom and Pop Tattoo Shop it was easy to figure out what I wanted to do. I knew it was a way for me to able to express myself and would give me the ability to help others be able to express themselves. I get to enjoy doing what I love every day and that’s a blessing that I’ll always be grateful for.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always had a passion for doodling, As I’m sure my math teacher could tell you. So when I found myself starting my apprenticeship at my Dads tattoo shop at 13 it just kinda clicked. I’ve been in love with tattooing ever since.

Its is difficult to apprentice under your own dad, especially when your a moody teen. But he dealt with my emo stage and spent years helping me understand art and teaching me tattoo application. I shadowed him until I was 18 and was able to start tattooing. It was not easy, it was a very humbling experience and lit a fire in me to improve!

Its a career that is constantly changing and evolving, which excites me. New people, new stories, new art everyday, I’m just happy to be a part of it all.

I’m just glad that I can help people from all walks of life express themselves in a way that they might not be able to do themselves.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Definitely check out the Redwoods! always a surreal time! For the food its not a visit unless we go to Mothers Cooking experience!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost id love to dedicate a shoutout to my Mom and Dad, cause I literally wouldn’t be exist without them! But for being patient with me all the years as I navigate this life.

My Sister for helping raise me and always being supportive.

Everyone at Nor Cal Tattoo, for being the most supportive and loving people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.

All my Clients, who supported me through out my entire career. You are all such unique and wonderful people!
