We had the good fortune of connecting with Dominic Zelek and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dominic, what matters most to you?
People. It’s really all about helping people. When I concentrate on that, the money follows. I see too many “businesses” today that are constantly trying to pull one over on the consumer, and they’re really just shooting themselves in the foot because that’s not sustainable. When you actually help people, you’re providing real value. And when you’re providing value, it gets reflected back to you.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I market myself as a web designer, because that’s what people are searching for and I do provide that. However, I am more of a web developer, which is fantastic, because when people are searching for web designer, most of the time, what they’re really looking for is a web developer. Once again, however, I do try to set myself apart from the competition by being more of a technology consultant for my clients. One of my favorite phases with a new client is the Discovery phase. I like to take some time to learn all about the company and how it operates. This helps me figure out ways to use the website, or perhaps some other technology, to improve their business in a way that really has an impact.

This is definitely not easy. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs, and I’ve had to take on a full-time job in the past when things weren’t working out, but everything is a learning experience. Every new experience builds on top of the last. Eventually, if you just keep your goals in mind, and keep at it, you’ll reach them.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Starting in OC, the Orange Circle is not far from me, so that’s typically the first cool spot I think of. If they’re into nature, I might suggest a hike in the canyons, or perhaps a day at the beach sounds more exciting. I usually go to the dog beach in Huntington, but down in Laguna, Victoria Beach is a beautiful spot.

I prefer Knotts over Disneyland. Disneyland is way overrated and way overcrowded and its like an hour-long process just to park the car. There are plenty of great rides and fun things to do at Knotts for a much lower price.

If they wanted to do some shopping, I’d bring them to South Coast Plaza or Fashion Island, which are some of the more iconic malls around here.

Of course, we’d have to spend some time in Los Angeles. I especially like Griffith Park the Hollywood area, and I know it pretty well since I went to music school around there. The Natural History museum is pretty neat too, if you like that stuff. But you can’t miss the Santa Monica Pier, especially if you like a fresh crab!

Lastly, if there’s time to go to San Diego, the zoo there is huge, you really could spend all day there, especially on a weekend when they have a lot of stuff going on. I always stop at the Old Town Historic Park in SD. It’s cool seeing the preserved history during the day, and then go to one of those restaurants by the Whaley house (a lot of ghost tour stuff around there too) or go to the Gaslamp Quarter.

I’ve never been to Fiesta Island Park, but I always drive by it on the 5 and everyone there looks like they’re having a blast!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Elmer Escobar. He’s one of my best friends from high school. He also moved here to OC and started a very successful wedding photography company called TNK Photo. I am currently his web developer, but I have shot for him as a photographer for a number of years. I have also worked for a handful of other wedding photographers, and Elmer just does things right. I have learned a lot watching him run his company, and I’m always bugging him for business advice.
