We had the good fortune of connecting with sabrina pare and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi sabrina, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
TikTok is often known for its dance challenges and viral trends, but it is also a platform that features a wealth of information on important topics such as sustainability. Many content creators, like myself, on TikTok are using the platform to share tips and strategies on how to live more sustainably and reduce our impact on the planet.

For example, creators are sharing tips on how to reduce plastic waste, conserve water, and lower our carbon footprint. Some of these tips include switching to sustainable swaps, composting, reducing meat consumption, and supporting ethical and sustainable fashion.

TikTok has become a platform for climate activists to spread awareness about important issues related to the environment, such as deforestation, ocean pollution, and climate change. We use the platform to educate are followers on the latest research and findings related to environmental science, and others use are platform to showcase activism and encourage others to get involved.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I create educational and lifestyle content on TikTok, Instagram, Pinterest and YouTube through the account Sabrina.Sustainable.Life for over 200,000K users. I am Detroit-based creator with content focused on making simple changes in our everyday lives to live more sustainably and reduce our environmental impact through low-waste living, gardening, composting, slow fashion, climate action and plant based eating. Through my content, I am able to provide pathways for my followers to take climate action, be a part of solutions, and access resources.

I believe what sets me apart from others is that I create content that is digestible, entertaining, concise, relevant, actionable, and that motivates viewers to become engaged in environmental conversations. I would like to think that I am relatable, and I show you do not need to be perfect to make a difference or be apart of the climate movement. Every voice matters and is needed.

My journey as not been easy. On top of being a content creator, I also have a full time job. It can be a lot to balance at times, and I am often working in the evenings or on weekends to make content. Luckily, I truly love both of my jobs, which makes it easier. I believe I got to where I am today as a creator through hard work and consistency. I have been creating videos almost daily since 2020. I have found myself burnt out at times, and when that happens, I allow myself to rest. I have learned taking time for yourself and breaks are super important.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Detroit is a hidden gem and in my opinion very underrated. The media has portrayed Detroit in a negative light, but there are so many beautiful and great things here. I would take them to Eastern Market sheds, which is which is an area that has vendors selling everything from tacos to colorful produce every Saturday. Their mission is to nourish a healthier, wealthier, happier Detroit, I would also take them to the Detroit International RiverWalk spans more than three miles, from Rosa Parks Blvd. to the Belle Isle Bridge. This breathtaking feature offers the RiverWalk Café for guests to fuel up for an enjoyable walk, run, bike ride or just to relax. We also have some great bars and vegan spots in Detroit. Some of my favorites are Bob Cat Bonnies, Cold Truth, Seva Detroit, Pjs Larger House, and Brooklyn Street local.

You can’t visit Michigan, without going to one of the Great Lakes. Going “Upnorth” is a very common things people do here as well, which typically involves staying at a cabin or campsite in northern Michigan or the Upper Peninsula. Some of the top things to see and visit are Mackinac Island, Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City, Pictured Rocks, Tahquamenon Falls, and Kitch-iti-kipi. Trust me, you would not be disappointed!

I was born and raised in Michigan, and do not have any plans to leave. I truly love it here!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have so many wonderful people that have helped me develop and grow into the person I am today. I am the Co-founder of EcoTok Collective, which is a group of environmental content creators who use social media to educate people on various climate and sustainability topics. We all come from a diverse background and area of expertise, and every member has taught me something new. It has been so helpful to have a supportive group, that understands what is it like to be a content creator, and they motive me to keep going even when things get difficult. Abbie Richards and Isais Hernandez who are on our executive board, have been great mentors to me and inspire me daily.

I also want to shout out the organization Impact Guild, who has given myself and EcoTok an incredible amount of support and guidance as a new organization.
