We had the good fortune of connecting with Michele Joyce and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michele, what is the most important factor behind your success?

I think my art career has been successful because I tend to share it with everyone around me. Art can be intiminating to purchase, so when people come into our gallery I introcuce them to all of the artists and invite them into the community as oposed to just pointing out my work. I like to promote the community as a whole and just get be talking about and enjoying the art experience. I feel like rising tides float all boats. I also teach as a way of building community around me. There is nothing in the world more exciting then seeing a student get into their first show or sell their first piece of art. It fills my cup!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

“I like to find the funky side of any ordinary image. My art isn’t about making a social statement, but about finding a different way of looking at things that elevates your emotional state. I simply want the images I create to make people smile a little – to be playful, rebellious and slightly irreverent.”
What do I like to paint??? In full disclosure, I’ve been accused of having multiple artistic personality disorder by fellow artists~ and that may be true. I spent a long time painting realism, but really love abstracts. I love the process and the supreme creative freedom of abstracts.  In sum, I would say that the happy place where both worlds intersect is bold COLOR! So more than a specific genre of art, I am drawn to painting BIG, BOLD CONTRASTS.

I have been painting for over 20 years and yes, a career in art is NOT easy. Art is personal and it is really hard to put yourself out there. Art is subjective and not everyone is going to love everything you do. There will be people that just don’t resinate with your work, but you just have to learn to pick yourself up and keep painting.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Probably start in Balboa Park at the Mingei International Museum and have lunch either in the sculpture garden at Panama 66 or in their cafe at Artifact.

I love to show people around Ashton Gallery at Art on 30th because in addition to great works hanging, it features working artists in studio upstairs. Love dinner at Wormwood after.

Bike rides from Point Loma along the Harbor and burger and beer at the Waterfront is a must.

Hiking around Torrey Pines is a happy place and favorite dinner restaurant right now is King Fisher.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Probably Roberta Dyer, Kate Ashton and the other artists in the professional group at Art on 30th who have guided me through some hard times and constantly made themselves available for help whenever needed.
