I think the value that matters the most to me is curiosity. It’s so important, especially as a songwriter to be curious about the world that surrounds us. It’s easy to just get comfortable inside of our little bubble but there’s so much inspiration out there. It keeps us young at heart. Kindness, empathy, and introspection matter most to me and I try to bring these values into my art and teaching practices every day. With my students, I think it’s important to approach them with compassion and engage the deep and personal parts of each individual to help them feel personally connected to ideas, learning, and the role they play in creating culture. I know that as humans we are alone in our minds and bodies yet so connected to one another. The principle that matters most to me is creativity. Artists can make a few bucks, or even have a career off of solely doing the business side of things correctly. I would rather keep my day job and stay creative as side hustle than sell out and become a phony artist that simply regurgitates a winning formula.
