At the age of four, I was painting on copy paper, scribbling on lined paper, and coloring on my Barbie coloring books daily. Almost all children color early in their life for fun; however, I remember I was obsessed with drawing as I would at least draw 10 drawings a day and give my work to my parents as gifts. For me, it was the bright colors that caught my attention and created an image from my imagination or experience to show both my parents and younger brothers. At an early age, I learned this was my way of showing my family how much I love and appreciate them. I would constantly draw my family together, holding hands in front of the house my parents rented. Valerie Alt | Furniture Designer

I always knew I wanted and needed to work with my hands and so I started studying. physical therapy and later on medicine. I always enjoyed working with and on people while being able to use my hands and mind to create a solution or fix a problem. However, over time I grew tired of always having to fix something or someone, every time I would meet a client there had already been a problem that I would try to solve as good as possible and prevent it from happening again. I enjoyed the aspect of being able to help and inspire people but medicine was just not the right approach for that. In between schools and before studying medicine, I already felt the need to explore other career choices and pretty randomly chose to learn carpentry. After finishing my apprenticeship, I continued my path down the medical road but it didn’t take me very long to realize that it was not meant for me. Read more>>
