We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Carpenter and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, so given that most of us are stuck at home due to the crisis, we’ve been asking folks about what they’ve enjoyed doing during quarantine. We’d love to hear what your favorite thing to do has been.
Before the quarantine I made handmade chalk bags for rock climbers. One everything shut down, business almost completely stopped for us. After a few weeks I realized I had all of the materials I need from the chalk bags to design a face mask. Now I am sewing around the clock making face masks and every one that is sold I donate one to someone in need!

What should our readers know about your business?
I am so proud of the business I created! STATIC Climbing started out as just an idea 6 years ago and has transformed from hobby to full time career now. Starting a business has been one of the most challenging things I have ever set out to do. Problems and mistakes are always going to happen in business, it’s how I grew from those instances that really has made me who I am today. If there is a problem, you just need to address it and figure out the best method to overcome it rather than try to create an environment that is always problem free. When the quarantine went into place and all of our wholesale orders disappeared overnight, I had to pivot and think of a new way to use the materials I had in my shop. Creating masks has really helped us keep the company going and donating hundreds of masks to hospitals has helped these uneasy times feel a little less scary.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would ride bikes down the bike path and stop in Oceanside at Pier View Coffee and then ride straight to the beach! Then we would ride our bikes to LTH for happy hour and back to the house where we would sit by a fire and enjoy the hot summer nights in San Diego.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My biggest inspiration is my boyfriend, Duncan. He is the other half to STATIC Climbing and been there for me through thick and thin for the last 7 years.
