We had the good fortune of connecting with William Ponder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi William, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
For me risk, has always played a large role in both my life and career. As a young man I went to Europe as a 17 year old, no one in my family had ever left the United states. I believe that unless you are uncomfortable, you are not testing your ability to overcome obstacles. My career has been full of risks. It has put me in the position to make the necessary decisions to be successful.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
As a native of San Diego, I would start with several unique communities ( Little Italy, Hillcrest, bunker hill, eatery like Extraordinary desserts, Balboa park and the Prado, stop in at Seaport village, walk towards the Star of India and catch an outdoor concert across the street at the county administrative building. Lastly, I take a drive to Coronado island and finish with a drink at famous bar overlooking the veranda and boardwalk.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think I would say both my mother and grandfather. My mother was a wonderful woman who was always supportive of me and my sisters. She became an businesswoman and was very civic minded. My grandfather had a ninth grade education but was a business man and in 1960 was the chairman of Democratic Central committee here in California. Both of them instilled in me the confidence to take risks and lead.
