We had the good fortune of connecting with Vinnie Vibez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vinnie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
There’s so much to be said about balance. It’s everything. As creatives, our brains are wired to automatically develop new ideas wether we intend to or not. Even against our own will at times. Although the overstimulation in our brains usually tends to lead to a new idea or creative project, it be can be extremely tolling on ones mental health. What do you do when it’s time to relax? Is relax really a thing for us? When you factor in the usual 9-5, five days a week or the serving gig thats a total shit show every time you show up, creating almost seems unrealistic sometimes. After an 8 hour shift, I can’t say that I’m always in the mood. For anything.

It can feel like we have to choose between a social life and our passion but that’s not necessarily the case either. I’m usually just tired. It gets tricky.

At one point, I used drugs to kind’ve manage all of the emotions & went days without sleep to fulfiill what I felt were my creative duties but that’s never a realistic long term solution. I can say my balance has changed significantly since I started making time for myself, living healthier, & moving at my own pace. I Guess the hardest part for me has been just trying not to burn myself out behind it all.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from your everyday artist is the transparency you’ll hear in my music. Theres beauty in imperfection and I believe we should celebrate our shortcomings, whereas those experiences usually turn out to be the most valuable. When people tell me my music is relatable it brings me joy. Whenever I hear songs that I relate to it makes me feel less alone & I just want to be able to do that for other people. I grew up in Richmond, Virginia and there’s a huge underground hip hop scene. I don’t know if I’d be pursuing music as seriously if it wasn’t for my experiences there. It wasn’t easy, but I want people to know that I’m getting better everyday. Not just as an artist but as a human being. I want the world to know that I’m ever evolving and learning to remain present in the process.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hm, lets see. March and Ash for some 1:1 Protabs in the early AM, then Kono’s in Pacific Beach for a Big Breakfast #2 (the one with the french toast). Depending on how packed that little secret patio is we’d probably eat and do some people watching for a little while. Theres never a dull moment in PB & sometimes I just like to be a tourist in my own neighborhood. I always find something to get into on the boardwalk. I never could really see myself living in a beach town but now that i’m here I couldn’t imagine it any other way. For dinner, It would have to be Steak N Fries (also in PB). I grew up on the east coast so the Philly cheesesteak has always been one of my favorite. That place is always on point. I sound like a foodie now. lol For drinks? I don’t know. Thrusters? Haha I went to Flamingo Deck for the first time the other day & it had a cool vibe. Kind’ve just depends where we end up. Regular PB stuff

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho is what initially sparked my shift in perspective and for that I’m forever grateful. I feel as though I identify with the shepherd boy in more ways than one. To read about how his journey was more of a matter of self realization was empowering and made more sense to me than a lot of things at the time that I read it. I encourage anybody dealing with self doubt and unrelenting, re occurring dreams of a drastically different life to check it out.
