We had the good fortune of connecting with Vincent S. Hughes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Vincent S., what matters most to you?
I believe that there are two primary principles that I live by: (1) integrity and (2) building trust through candor and honesty. Integrity means doing what you say you’re going to do in an ethical and prudent way. Follow through on your word and make sure to give it your all whenever you engage in any task, no matter how small. In terms of building trust through candor and honesty, the main point is to be transparent and lay out the good, the bad, and the ugly. People appreciate the brutal honesty and the fact that you’re not simply saying what they want to hear goes a long way.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I truly started from the bottom in the legal field. In fact, I was actually fired from my first legal job for not catching on quick enough to their processes. Instead of giving up, though I quickly found another paralegal job and learned from my mistakes and decided to be the best paralegal and legal student I could be. It wasn’t long before I decided to go to law school with the intention of opening my own office to provide legal representation to those who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford it.

Soon after passing the bar exam )on my first attempt), I opened up my own office with the goal of leveraging technology to provide affordable legal representation by maximizing efficiency. I quickly learned that they don’t teach you the business aspect of running a law firm in school, but I began working 16-18 hour days to ensure I provided the best legal representation to clients while constantly trying to learn more and more. I’ve learned to be like a sponge, oftentimes finding myself patiently sitting in the back of a room soaking up as much knowledge as possible from other legal scholars, judges, and others.

Now, I focus every day on implementing more efficient strategies which both save time and provide increased value to my clients, often resulting in lower legal fees as a result.

My office’s vision is to make legal representation available to all, no matter how big or small the case may be. I don’t back down and I never waiver on getting the best possible result for my clients!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Living in Southern California provides a great opportunity to chose from a wide variety of things to do and see. In a matter of an hour you can can in desert, mountains, valley, or on a beach; it’s amazing! Whenever I have an out of town friend, I always have to try to take them on a culinary adventure in San Diego, where you can find the best Mexican food north of the border in Old Town, the best Italian food in Little Italy, and a plethora of bars and lounges from the Gaslamp Quarter to Ocean Beach.

We would likely start our day at one of my favorite hole in the wall diners for breakfast, Margarita’s in Ocean Beach. After a filling and delicious breakfast, taking a stroll along Ocean Beach of Mission Bay is a must, followed by a nice lunch at one of the pizzerias downtown or along the beach. Seeing as how San Diego is one of the major hubs for craft beer, a trip to Pizza Port, Ballast Point, or another local brewery would round out the afternoon. Finally, a nice dinner at Rockin Baja Lobster in Old Town and a few cocktails at one of the many bars, lounges, or clubs in the Gaslamp would definitely round out our San Diego trip.

The next few days would be spent traveling around Southern California, from my hometown of San Bernardino to the always adventurous LA to sightsee, play tourist, and eat until our heart was content.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I truly have to give a shout out to those who have remained supportive throughout my life; the ups, the downs, the trials and tribulations of law school and bar prep. My fiancé, Jessica, my dad, and my brother in law (who is also a lawyer) have picked me up everytime I thought about throwing in the towel. Without them I wouldn’t be where I am today!
