We had the good fortune of connecting with Versell “VERSEatyle” Motley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Versell “VERSEatyle”, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
As far as being artistic and making it a career it definitely wasn’t an idea that I planned out, but yet something that came to me out of the love of my arts and talents which enabled me to view my own personal growth throughout all aspects of my life. I’ve had many different occupations such as military, wildland fighter fighting, security, retail, construction, and much more in my lifetime, and I can say that I love my creative career the most because of the freedom, self growth, social connectivity, and empowerment that it includes in the long run. When I first started it began as a hobby that would consume countless hours of experience and joy within my life, but over time it began to evolve into a full blown independent business in which I market and promote my brand professionally and proficiently still to this day. For example with popping, breakdancing, and other types of Hip Hop oriented dances that I’ve performed, I’ve created numerous partnerships with multiple businesses and brands, which creates collateral impact between the parties involved by the creative showcasing of the products provided by the companies. Career wise, music has been a great platform and tool which presents my ethics, intentions, perspectives, and much more characteristics that resonates with potential people who will relate and want to do business on a more detailed and higher level. The biggest challenge with this type career in my opinion is the consistency and patience of reaching the point of financial stability in the beginning when starting out new. As they say, “the first step is always the hardest”, so then its important to ask “is this risk worth the reward?” for what you want. If something that you work hard on doesn’t seem like work anymore and you benefit from it, it is now called a blessing.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The biggest attribute that sets me apart from other Hip Hop artists is that I’m one of the few rap/producing artists that can perform popping & breakdance oriented dance professionally. It took me years of long practice with trial and error to acquire my talents and reach a high caliber of skill within them, and it definitely was not easy at all. Some of the biggest challenges I had to overcome was budgeting towards my music career while undergoing financial hardships, marketing my brand from scratch, working alone, and the lack of knowledge towards how to monetize from my arts. Learning that I needed to have a budget for my artistic career alone was a big stepping stone and realization for me because when I started to “promote” myself, I didn’t fully understand that I needed to invest large amounts of money into my content’s creation and promotion, which resulted in me taking longer to reach the point of proper marketing of my brand. Now I understand a wide amount of information about marketing and branding which changed the direction of how I handle my finances towards everything, and I am now currently preparing my next album which will have more proper execution for a greater result versus my previous project releases. I’ve learned the main component that has helped carry me in life and that has also carried many others around for so long is to never quit, but to continue.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m a classic San Diego Mexican food snob, so if my friend were from out of town I’d first show some of my favorite spots such as Mr. Adobada, Tacos El Gordo, or Lolitas to set the tone for someone new. In San Diego its a melting pot city of many cultures so its pretty much what my friend would want to do. Looking for lively bar areas? I’d suggest North Park, Downtown, Pacific Beach, Little Italy, etc. San Diego is also known for great beer, so I would highly recommend trying these places. Looking to shop? Fashion Valley, Mission Valley, Plaza Bonita, Otay mall would be some usual choices from locals, although there are spots everywhere in most towns to be honest. I’m more of a 5 for 10, swap meet, thrift store, mom & pop shop and online shopping person myself, but for an out of town friend those would be some go to places. I would definitely bring a friend to Imperial Beach, Coronado Beach, La Jolla Beach, Ocean Beach, Sunset Cliffs, A Padres Game, Comic Con, Cowles Mountain, the Zoo, Sea World, Club & Bar hopping at night, and more but that’s all I can think of for now.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Honestly if I were to name everyone involved in my success one way or another, I’d still be forgetting people that I truly do appreciate being there for me in my life, so I’d have to say everyone in groups. So with that, a very special thanks and much love to my family, friends, and loved ones, along with all my influencers, engineers, producers, artists, marketers, promoters, and upcoming new people that I will meet eventually.
