We had the good fortune of connecting with Valerie Maksym and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Valerie, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I divorced for the second time at the age of 44 I had been a stay at home mom of 4. I looked into finding a job and all the jobs I qualified for would not have even paid my monthly rent not after working all month. So I knew I had to do something else. I started my personal training business.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I enjoy training clients in the gym. However I am 52 and don’t want to be on my feet like that all day so I have begun to build my dream job. I received a life coaching certification from John Maxwell seven years ago. Over the seven years I have read and listened to hundreds of speakers on all the life coaching topics and have applied it to my life personally. Two years ago I decided I really wanted to pursue my life coaching/ public speaking career. It was covid so things have taken a little longer than anticipated to get off the ground. This process has not been easy and I have overcome the challenges by having personal breakthroughs in my life as well as seeing breakthroughs in my kids lives. A few of the lessons I have learned along the way are how to build self confidence, self love and to live an authentic lifestyle that is congruent and true to my core values. The lessons on living an authentic life have been huge in my life. Looking back I now see the moment where my life turned and how I went down the wrong path for 38 years. I am so thankful that I was able to figure this out because now I show up wherever I go as my authentic self. My brand is called Maksymizing Life and I want that to become a movement. A movement where people are inspired and moved to level up in all areas of their life including mentally, emotionally, spiritually, relationships, financially, and physically. Tiny changes can change the trajectory of ones life.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If a friend were visiting my area for a week I would take them to Galveston to ride bikes down the seawall and enjoy the beach view as we ride our bikes. We would stop for lunch at a restaurant that over looks the water. We would go down to the beach and enjoy walking in the sand and getting in the water. This would be a day trip and we would head back to the woodlands that evening. I would show her around my town of the woodlands on day two. We would walk the waterway and each brick oven pizza while sitting outside over looking the courtyard area. I would take her shopping in market street and we would stop in at 60 vines to have a drink of Prosecco on tap. They have live bands that play in the square, so we would move out there after we ate to enjoy the music. I would take her to the hill country to float the river, shop, eat at the local restaurants there and sit out by the pool to relax. At some point during out week, we would go to my favorite restaurant in Houston, Pappas steakhouse. I would recommend the cheesecake for dessert because I have found people that don’t like cheesecake, love theirs. It is the best!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
When I decided to go for my dream of writing a book it was during this time I met a good friend at the gym. He was my mentor, encourager and support for the two years it took me to write the book. Without his daily support. I know I would not have finished my book. I even dedicated my book to Allen as well.
