We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyler Martina and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyler, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The single most important thing to my success would is doing what is right. This may seem like a very simple answers, but a lot of the time the simplest ideas are the best. To dive a little deeper into my answer, let’s take a look at my tattoo shop, Mr. Inkwells. In less than 2 years we were able to build the highest rated and most reviewed tattoo shop in Southern California. People always ask me, “What is the secret to the shops success?” and I always reply with “Doing the right thing.” The right thing for the staff, the right thing for the clients, and the right thing for the community. This means sometimes you may sacrifice a dollar here and there to do the right thing. And, that’s okay. I just think of it as an additional dollar invested into the mission of Mr. Inkwells. The mission of changing the way the world looks at tattoo shops, and making getting a tattoo easy and accessible to everyone. And not just easy to get tattoos, but also easy for tattoo artists to create amazing works of arts. That is why all the staff at Mr. Inkwells tattoo shop are partners, from a first day apprentice to master artist. We all share in the success of the company, and we all contribute what we can to continue to grow and thrive together. This is the same philosophy I am have used to build all of my businesses. And, it is the foundation for any new business venture I embark on. For example, I am putting together a business collective in the US Virgin Islands. This collective will give the members access to state of the art technology for growing their businesses, and world class marketing to help them reach new clients. The collective will also offer an app to locals and visitors that will allow them to shop with their phones at restaurants and other stores. What does the app cost customers? Zero. What does it cost for businesses to join the collective? Zero. Why? Because it is the right thing to do. To grow together organically by providing what is needed. Then, as profits are made sharing in those together. Again, it is a very simple answer and a very simple philosophy. However, its simplicity is what leads to success. In closing, do the right thing.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I have always been into tattoos. Tattoos are an amazing form of art that has been around for thousands of years and have been helping people express themselves in a very cool way. Although tattoos have been around forever they have just recently become an accepted part of our cultural identity. Although they are becoming more mainstream one thing has remained the same… the “Tattoo Shop”. Now don’t get me wrong, there are some great tattoo shops out there, however, there are many that are unfriendly, not upfront with the pricing, you don’t know the quality of the tools or inks, and they seem a little dirty. These tattoo shops are stuck in the past and have not progressed to meet the needs of clients as tattoos have gained popularity and the client base has changed. So, one day I am in the car on my way to get some new ink. This trip to get more ink is going to take 7 hours round trip… why so long you may ask? Because, I wanted to get my tattoo at a shop I trusted, and it so happened that the only place I knew I could trust was a 7-hour round trip away. That’s when It clicked, I said to myself “This is ridiculous!” There has to be a better way, a way that you can go to a tattoo parlor and know that it is going be a good experience, upfront pricing, clean place, good quality inks, and of course great artists. Light bulb moment. That’s when I decided that if a place like that didn’t exist I would create one… And that is when Mr. Inkwells Classy Tattoos and the Mr. Inkwells Guarantee was born
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First thing we would do would be to hit Huntington Beach, that way they could roll down the PCH and then stick their feet in the Pacific Ocean. Next, we would grab a taco at Chronic Tacos. Then go grab a nice craft beer at Green Cheek Brewery. For a night cap I would say bar hopping on Main street or checking out some fights at 2nd Floor.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to give a shoutout to my Wife Tami Martina for always being crazy enough to join me on all my adventures. She also makes sure that I cross my T’s and dot my I’s. She is a true partner, friend, and skilled lover. Also, want to give a shoutout to my Pops Marty Martina for unwittingly making we a Stoic. His teachings on how I should view life, and how to work have helped me accomplish a countless number of goals. I would also like to give a shoutout to my team. Thanks for always going above and beyond, and always pushing yourselves and me to be better. And, of course for listening to all my crazy rants without rolling your eyes too much. And last but not least, my Daughter Lexie. She was a born entrepreneur, and more importantly one of the funnest and nicest girls in the world. She is truly my best bud. Quick list of some book shoutouts that have really helped me: The Greatest Salesman, The 48 Laws of Power, Total Recall, Antifragile, Tao De Ching, The Future Of Humanity, Letters From a Stoic, How To Think Like A Roman Emperor, Sex Before Dawn.
