We had the good fortune of connecting with Tori Towers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tori, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
I am a very in the moment person which can be a blessing and a curse. But in the creative process of custom coloring hair, being fully present mentally and just in the zone I feel like helps give great results.
Creating systems our outlines that I can follow and tailor them to each client has helped a ton as well. Be it for color, formulas, scheduling, pricing, inventory etc.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I opened Salty Bronde Salon in 2021 when it was still pandemic-esque time. There were a lot of riots and unsettling things going on around San Diego and the world so I wanted to create a safe space to work in and welcome my clients to that was hidden away from the rest of the world.
When I found the space that would become my salon off of Sunset cliffs blvd, there were just a couple setbacks.
#1 The day I was supposed to sign the lease this massive fire broke out in our apartment building at home! It was pretty traumatizing so we had to push the signing of the lease out.
#2. We had a trip to France already planned and only had 15 days to get the space operational. Eeek! It was an old art studio and was mainly just a box of a building with no lighting or plumbing for the shampoo bowls, yet had the right bones. It was naturally bright, open and airy and very private with so much charm. So we decided to go full force and get as much done as we could in those 15 days as possible. Renovations were a lot of work since I had zero experience but I knew that to start out I just needed a shampoo bowl with running water and a chair. Luckily we were able to get electricians, plumbers, dry wallers and framers all having either cancellations or working overtime to help us get things done in that short time frame. I designed the layout with the help of my friend Carmel who had just opened Casa salon in mission hills. Then I obsessively created the design and vibe and focused all of my attention to the creative aspects.
I love being able to co create in such a relaxed chill environment, it’s really a vibe.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We would definitely go for a hike down to Blacks beach (the surf side , not the nudist part lol), get a boba at happy lemon, ride bikes in coronado, get the gin and tonic at Fernside, and I am big on quality food (not just an Instagram worthy decor type place). So I would take them to my faves – Izakaya masa for traditional Japanese food
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Hands down would not be where I am professionally and just in life in general without my chéri (dear one in French), my husband, Jason. We met in Paris when we were in our early 20’s and he has been my rock and pillar ever since. Supporting me through cosmetology school and making me breakfast literally every morning (we’re big on nutrition), being my sounding board and helping make decisions running the salon, being #1 diy handyman, reassuring me and pumping me up during the occasional melt down being a new mom haha. And as of last year the best dad I could ever imagine to our baby boy Léo.
