We had the good fortune of connecting with Tony Bryant and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tony, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I built Beast Up Athletics in the hopes of starting a family oreinted sport driven enviroment for the youth and young adults ! After my basketball career I did a lot of soul searching and decided to combine my two biggest passions. Kids and sports! Kids are the purest thing on earth and have always been the key to a better future. Now that i’m a father of one, this dream of mine has become even more pressident in my life! . My next motivating factor for starting my business is Sports! Sports have taught me so much about life…like, heart break, success, mental strength, social interaction, unfairness, and much more. I’m also very passionate about this because of where our world is turning… I can see a direct correlation with family and sports…Think about this, Kids are being taught at a young age that if something isn’t going right on their team that they can just pick up and leave and go to another team down the street.. How do you build mental toughness, character, and problem solving skills with this approach!? You can’t!! So now you have a kid that is being taught that it’s ok to quit and go somewhere else without remorse. They will psychologically carry that into adulthood and marriage, work etc.. My business is also geared around changing the culture and the ideology that once lingered around sports. Since Beast Up Athletics was built by a guy with a kids heart. In my attempt to leave this world better. I realized that children have to be the starting point. So My mission was to impact kids through sports! Thus the birth of Beast Up Athletics!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Beast Up Athletics was built by a man with a kids heart! One of the things that I’m most proud of is a near perfect retention rate. Once a beast up person, always a beast up person!. Beast Up Athletics is family! Beast Up Athletics is a program that always has a revolving door and is 100 percent aware that it takes unconditional love and understanding to truly help someone! I believe my calling is children and I have an overwhelming desire to help every Student athlete out. On or off the court! I feel like I was fortunate to have so many great role models in my life that I was predestined to pay it forward. The one thing that I always try to Ingrain into my student athletes is… never dwell on anything for too long. Learn from it and keep pushing forward. My favorite quote kind of sums it up,”more is lost in indecision then, wrong decisions!”I leave you with this, “Respect, learn and compromise! Everything else will fall into place.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, the best thing about living in So cal is the weather no doubt! So first stop on my perfect week would have to be the beach. There’s Nothing like being in 70 degree weather in early march. Then, I would take a walk to a place called pacific city and check out a restaurant called Bear Flag. This restaurant has a wonderful fish burrito or veggie if desired. And if fish isn’t for you, They have plenty of other restaurant in the vicinity that will accommodate your needs. After a late lunch I like to go back to the house and chill out, take a shower, have a cocktail or two and call the friends to see what the plan is for the tonight. The night life in So cal is so unique because of the plethora of thing to do! From, Escape rooms, bars, clubs, bowling, miniature golf, house parties, block parties, and many more. I lean more towards clubs and bars or house parties but am always down to go with the flow. Now that we have finish the first day and shown you what seems like the best of the best. We kick it into overdrive! Now comes to the 2nd reason So Cal is just different… We have the luxury of getting to a lot of different environments in a short amount of time! Example: In about a hour and an a half time we go from being on the beach to strapping in and shredding the slopes in big bear. So, with that being said, day two would have us snowboarding or skiing in the morning and as a treat in the afternoon after we get some food from a local spot in big bear( they are all pretty good and decently priced) we travel to arrowhead to hit the water and do some wake boarding. And if you time your vacation right or if you live in So cal then, I have a must for you guys to try! Its called the outdoor hat trick. ( didn’t make it up and the person who made it up probably calls it something else) So this is the challenge, you have to Snowboard,Wakeboard, and Surf in the same day and since So cal is the best place to live…. This is a totally realistic challenge! Day three, Now that we have finished day two with a bang and are probably burnt out. I like to Destress and take a spa day and just rejuvenate the body. This is also a good time to call friends and family and tell them that you are not leaving SO Cal OR you can tell friends and family that they should move to So Cal. Ok! Day four, We hit the San Diego zoo and Sea World! You haven’t lived until you have seen this zoo and sea world needs just one word… shamu!! Side note: San Diego has one of my all time favorite breakfast spots, Richard Walker Pancake House. I highly recommend it if you can plan your day right.( open from 6:30-2:30) Days 5-6 will have a amusement park and or water park in it. Six flags magic mountain is my favorite and I love soak city at knotts berry farm. Day Seven, We end at where we started, The Beach!! We also plan your next vacation out to see So Cal again.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’m a firm believer in the slogan, “ It takes a village!” to be successful in life! I have so many people in my life that have influenced/mentored me that it’s hard to talk about just a few! So here are some of the standouts, my sister, parents, godfather, all my kids that have gone through my program.. Let’s start with my older sister, Juanita Sonya Bryant. An intelligent, strong,charismatic,selfless,self-made,mother of two,and just an inspiration to all women. She has been pivotal in my upbringing. So much so that for a time period I would refer to her as my mother. haha Sonya has always set the expectation bar high, while never holding it over my head. I have always thought of myself blessed to have been able to call her my sister. Funny thing about that, growing up I never claimed to have a sister because I was jealous of all of her accomplishments. My actual mother, Juanita Bryant… has been my immovable rock! She was placed on this earth to serve and has definitely passed that trait to me. My Mother is my first love without a doubt!! My Godfather, George Abbascia taught me hard work and perseverance. Growing up George was like a superhero in my eyes. I had never seen a person take on so many hats in life. Working, cooking, cleaning and most importantly… Being present in my life and his three kids and his better half. I put my past/current kids on here because without them I wouldn’t be who I am today! Watching my current/past students grow and mature and become men and women themselves has been absolutely priceless. They are the fuel that keeps me going on my quest to make sure I’m raising upstanding men and women. Can’t forget to thank my dad, Mr. Bill Bryant for making me a man. He prepared me for a lot of obstacles I would/currently are going through in life. He is a man of few words, more about actions! I can always count on him for an honest opinion of how I’m doing with my business. hahaha I would also like to highlight a woman that made this possible, Rachel Drolet!! Rachel has been a wonderful friend/mentor to me. She has inspired me with her hard work, her genuine compassion for others and overall outlook of life. I would also like to say that she might be the only person I’ve ever seen that can actually Mulitask. haha
