We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanzania Akia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanzania, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk taking for me has proven to be great in my career thus far. When thinking of taking risk(s) or stepping out of your comfort zone, one must really think about what it is they are taking a risk on, weighing the pros and cons of taking the risk, and their approach to taking the risk. I feel like I have fully accepted that to be where I want to be in life, risks must be taken.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Whew! Busy is a understatement in my life. Aside from working my 9-5 as a group home supervisor, with what time I have left I am consistently working on building myself as a brand in the modeling industry. I work to stay motivated; I am always researching and looking for ways to be inspired to build myself as a creative so that I can too, inspire others. To inspire is my goal ❤️. One thing that I am always striving to do is to network and build connections with brands and businesses in and around my community. I also love to connect with the plus size community from all over the world. I run a Facebook group called “Big Beautiful Connections” where all plus size women can come and connect with one another. We share experiences, and uplift each other.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Yes! I know of some amazing local businesses I would love to share. If you are ever needing a studio for photoshoot, Video shoot, podcast recording, or to host an event, I definitely recommend Hendo Studios, which is owned by Courtney Hendo. His studio is the best in San Diego and it is the perfect spot to unleash all of your creativity.
If you are needing your hair slayed in a timely matter, and for great pricing I suggest you visit Yes Hunnie Extension Bar, owned by Nisha Nugent. Nisha is amazing at what she does and she takes pride in her work! Yes Hunnie has nourished my hair to health and made it grow.
If you are looking for a dope nail tech, Raisa Rosenbluth, owner of Nail Addictionz has got you. She is superb in her craft. She cares about the overall health and care of her customers nails. She comes up with the most creative designs on nails.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost I want to thank my family. They have supported me greatly when it comes to chasing my dreams. Along with them I want to shout out my creative sisters Malani (photographer, Wildflower Photography) and Latara (designer, Cold Peace): We are the three Duprees, literally always uplifting and supporting each other as creatives and most importantly as friends. I would also love to shout of the plus size community. I am meeting more and more people who identify as being part of the plus size community, and the words of encouragement means everything to me.
