We had the good fortune of connecting with TaiReikca L.A. and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi TaiReikca, why did you pursue a creative career?
Why not?! Being artistic/creative is freedom. When I’m creating my own work, I have to follow no ones rules but mine. And I don’t have to make it follow what the world is; I can create my own world, my own universe and it’s a beauty that is unmatched. Similarly when I work with other artists. We collaborate to bring into life the reality of the creation. Not only is the end result something to be proud of; the process, or the journey to that point is equally as beautiful, if not more.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Something that sets me apart from others is my weirdly unique way of combining passion with rawness. Art is a huge part of my life and for me, the only way to do it justice is to lay it out with no filter, even if it makes people uncomfortable. I’m proud of how far I’ve come in my artistry and I’m excited for what I’ll do next. I want to do so much and I have so many ideas in my head to get out; I can’t help but look forward to what’s to come. I’m where I am today because of those that poured into me; those that contributed to my foundation with their teachings and knowledge and mentorship and friendships. Along the way, I learned to give myself credit as well. I‘ve always been teachable and even now, I’m always willing to learn from those around me. That’s what really helped me to grow and nurture my artistry. I’ve also learned to step away from circumstances that don’t value me. I’m grateful for what I learned while in those situations, however, if something is not serving me or my artistry or is terrible for my mental health, it’s not worth it. The most important part of my journey however, was learning and accepting that who I am as an artist is perfect. Not in the way of I have nothing to improve (because growth/improvement never stops) but in realizing that TaiReikca L.A. is a unique being and has something new and spectacular to bring to the world. And the only way I’m able to do that is to know that I don’t have to fit myself into a mold of what society says I have to be. I’m successful when I’m living in my truth, and that’s the perfection. What’s for me is for me, and it’s when I live and love in that perfection is when obtain all that is for me.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m still new to the area, so there’s a lot for me to learn lol. But from the great experiences I have had, Coronado Beach would definitely be on the list! Along with walking around Balboa Park, & the Art Museum. As for food, Surf ‘n Soul, and Baja Betty’s! Once theatre open again, San Diego Rep will be on the list!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be as far as I am today without the dedicated and unwavering support of my amazing partner Nubia, who sees more in me than I know and encourages me to be that person. Also, my best friends/sisters Dani, Jalesa, Erin, Neika, and Nicci who have supported me endlessly. My entire family who’s supported my dreams. And last but not least, my colleagues/theatre family from Alabama State and CalArts; all of whom have made me not only a better artist, but a better person.
