Meet Sydney Thofehrn | Nail Artist & Graphic Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Sydney Thofehrn and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sydney, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business as a nail artist was driven by my passion for creativity and the desire for independence. As a graphic design student, I’ve always had an eye for visual aesthetics, and nails became another way for me to express my artistry. I wanted the freedom to bring my creative vision to life without limitations while also building a brand that reflects my unique style. Being my own boss allows me to set my own schedule, connect with clients on a personal level, and continuously push my skills to new heights. I saw an opportunity to turn something I love into a career, and I knew that with dedication and consistency, I could create something truly special.
My goal is for every client to feel cared for and comfortable from the moment they walk in. A big part of my vision was creating a comfortable and inviting space for my clients—somewhere they could truly relax and enjoy the experience of getting their nails done. I designed my space to feel like a mini escape, with a sound bar for high-quality audio, soft warm lighting & comfortable plush seating. Clients can watch their favorite movies, listen to their own curated playlists, or simply unwind.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is all about merging creativity with personal expression, and I’m always looking for new ways to blend my skills as a graphic design student with my work as a nail artist. What sets me apart is my approach to design. I love challenging myself to push the boundaries of nail art, whether it’s through mixing media, creating minimalistic designs with a lot of impact, or designing custom nail art that reflects my clients’ personal style.
What excites me most is seeing my designs come to life on someone’s hands and knowing it’s a piece of art they’re wearing every day. That connection between my work and how it makes someone feel is what drives me. I’m proud of how I’ve built a brand that reflects my passion for visual design, as well as the trust I’ve built with my clients over time.
Getting to where I am today wasn’t easy. As a graphic design student balancing school, work, and growing my nail business, there were definitely challenges. Learning to manage my time effectively, staying disciplined while juggling multiple responsibilities, and dealing with self-doubt at times were all hurdles. But through it all, I’ve learned the importance of persistence.
What I want the world to know about me and my brand is that it’s not just about nails—it’s about creating an experience. I want my clients to feel like they’re stepping into a space where they can not only get beautiful nails but also relax, unwind, and connect. It’s about expressing individuality, supporting each other’s creativity, and celebrating the art of self-care. Ultimately, my story is about pursuing my passions with resilience, staying connected to the people I serve, and always striving to make my art meaningful.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
We’d start with breakfast at Better Buzz Coffee, then take a scenic drive down Coast Highway to Torrey Pines for a beautiful coastal hike. Afterward, we’d grab poke tacos at Duke’s La Jolla before strolling around Coronado Island. As the day winds down, we’d enjoy an In-N-Out Burger picnic at Kate Sessions Park with panoramic views of the city and a sunset to cap off the day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without the support and encouragement of the people around me. First and foremost, I want to shout out my clients—without them, I wouldn’t be able to do what I love every day. Their trust in my creativity and their continued support mean everything to me.
I also have to recognize my friends and family, who have always believed in me and pushed me to keep going, even when things felt uncertain. Their encouragement has helped me stay motivated and confident in my journey as both a graphic design student and a nail artist.
