We had the good fortune of connecting with Sinazo Nongena and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sinazo, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

I wanted to create opportunities for myself. South Africa currently has a high unemployment rate. My short-term vision is to create unique styles which are inspired by my culture, source fabrics that are used to make traditional attire but mix them with different types of fabrics. Creating styles that tell a story is very important to me because I want my clientele to relate to what I have created, be proud to wear that particular garment. My medium-term vision is my company grow by creating employment opportunities for skilled people in my industry I believe it takes a team to make a dream work however I need to be selective of who I bring into my team as people will never have a similar vision but hiring people who understand the vision and can see themselves being apart of it is important to me.

The long-term vision is to occupy a manufacturing space in Africa and be able to compete with the rest of the world. What I have realized is Africa has so much talent and the world deserves to see that talent.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

I am currently working for an established fashion retailer. I started working as an Assistant Planner and am currently a Digital Marketing Coordinator.

I got to where I am professionally by; going through my schooling career, taking a gap year, and working in retail as a fashion consultant then university to obtain a Diploma in Fashion and Degree in Clothing Management whilst studying in university I would work part-time for a Fashion company that hosts fashion weeks I did that for 2 years in my final year I did few internships. The internships I did during my university years exposed me to the different job roles that are available in the fashion industry.
In 2020 I spent the year being a full-time fashion entrepreneur beginning of the year I would receive a few orders which would sustain me and my business than when the pandemic started I could no longer operate as I did not get clients during that time I decided I would take a break from business for 2021 as I needed more work experience in the corporate space so I can be exposed to so much more. In the 12 months, I have worked in corporate I learned so much about the business of fashion and discovered I actually need to work a few more years in this space as I need to learn more about the business of fashion once I have gathered enough knowledge and experience then I can go back to working in my company full time. Working in a corporation allows me to save money which I can invest in my own company.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Cape Town, South Africa so there is so much to see. I would take my friend Winelands, Langebaan, Hermanus, Houtbay, Seapoint, Camps Bay, and Woodstock. The best places to eat are Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock they have amazing restaurants and food stalls.
Bobo’s restaurant for their delicious pasta or ribs, Kloofstreet House for divine three-course meals.

Pearly’s Restaurant, Boesmanland Plaaskombuis in Langebaan to name a few of these restaurants to have breathtaking ocean views.
Bientang’s Cave Restaurant & Wine Bar in Hermanus. What I like about this restaurant is that it is literally on the rocks, serves delicious food and the experience is beautiful.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family for always being there for me and supporting me with everything that I do. My friends who I have met along the way contributed in their respective way to my growth and journey to success.

Colleagues I have met along the way who supported, mentored, and helped me with my career journey. Last but not least, as a Christian woman, there are many occasions I needed to communicate with God and have faith in God as my journey has had its ups and downs. My journey to my success and personal growth requires me to have lots of faith and an understanding it may take time to get to where I need to be. Also understanding everything experience I go through in my journey good or bad is for my character development.
