We had the good fortune of connecting with Shareef Clayton and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shareef, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was inspired by my father Anthony Clayton who was a saxophonist. When I was a kid we would play duets together and it was always fun. I chose music as a career after studying with trumpeter Melton Mustafa at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center in Miami. He was a great musician and I really liked his level of dedication to the craft. He represented excellence on the highest level.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets you apart from others?

I started off as a trumpeter only but now I’m an entertainer. Between my trumpet playing, showmanship, and compositions this is what makes me different. It’s a total package.

How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges?
Practice , Consistency, Networking, and a bit of luck. I have to add luck in there because sometimes you’re just at the right place at the right time.  You just need to have a go get it mentality and don’t give up.

What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way?
The lessons I’ve learned is more on the business side. For example like how to book gigs, Marketing & Advertisement, Branding. I recommend all musicians either take a business course or just read books related to the topic. I read a book years ago ” How to Be Your Own Booking Agent” and after reading it I booked a tour in Florida. I had no idea how to do anything and that booked helped me.

Another thing that helped was learning about money management through a financial advisor.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Red Lion
Cafe Wha
Small’s Jazz Club
Minton’s Jazz Club
Silvanas
Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola
