We had the good fortune of connecting with Sergio Ramirez Jr. and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sergio, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
There were a lot of instances in my life that guided me to the path of entrepreneurship…
I actually started my entrepreneur journey in middle school selling candy out of my back pack. My mom also ran her own “business” cleaning houses for a living.
When I was studying Electrical Engineering in college I realized that I didn’t want to work at an office or be stuck to a computer all day.
When applying for my first job at the SDSU library I realized I hated someone watching over me all the time.
It wasn’t until I experienced my first real career job as a personal trainer that I was able to create my own schedule, work whenever I wanted and had no one to answer to, that I realized that this is what I was meant to do.
It felt right and it felt familiar. I didnt know it at the time but looking back, everything lead to this, starting my own business.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
SRJ FITNESS was created to help individuals adopt the fitness lifestyle. It started as me just wanting to put out fitness content for fun. This passion of mine turned into something much greater. Throughout the years I was able to create a community of people who strived to better themselves both physically and mentally. One of my proudest moments is creating a strong community who support and push each other to be better.
Unlike other trainers, I try to provide the best for my clients through constant knowledge. We are always learning together. The learning doesn’t just happen during our sessions or check ins. I try to provide unlimited value to my clients so that they always have something to learn. Most trainers try to gatekeep their secrets so the client doesn’t leave, not me, I give it away.
Getting to where I am today was definitely not easy. It took a lot of work and a lot of time. I had several mentors leading up to this who have helped me both with the business and coaching aspect.
I overcame challenges the only way I knew how, by trial and error. Ive made a lot of mistake along the way but that’s where I learned the most. I developed a lot of grit and discipline through fitness and simply because I wanted to be great. I had a no quit mentality and there was nothing I would not overcome.
One of the biggest lessons I learned was to treat everything like a relationship. Business is all about building relationships. You build relationships with clients, customers and employees. So if you want to build your business and scale, you need to get better at building those relationships. You have to nurture, care for your people and communicate.
I want the world to know that my brand “Be Ready” is for those who want to better themselves. Be Ready is about being proactive in life and being prepared for whatever life might throw at you. Be Ready is a mentality that you adopt and apply to your everyday life. Preparation is key and the only way we can prepare is by taking action.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’ve been a home body for so long that this was probably the hardest question to answer for me. I always eat breakfast at home. I love my home made breakfast, but with that some coffee from Cafecito on Palm Ave. always hits the spot.
We definitely have to get a workout in at one of my favorites gyms in San Diego which would be either The Compound or TG Chula Vista.
My FAVORITE spot to eat has to be Little Sakana; all you can eat sushi. Definitely hits the spot after a good workout. I love eating a lot, so my thing is buffets and all you can eat spots. Korean BBQ is also one of my favorites, so 365 or Manna for KBBQ.
For dessert, my go to is frozen yogurt. Yogurt on the Rocks in Pacific Beach is good. Maybe have some donuts with that from YumYum Donuts.
Some of my favorite things to do in the city are being active. Playing sports, going to a local park and playing pickup soccer. Walking around Belmont Park, playing games in the arcade and catching a game of minigolf.
I would probably end the night with a movie at home or at the movie theaters, with lots of popcorn, extra butter.
When I used to go out back in the day. I would always hit Downtown San Diego or go across the border to Tijuana. Some of the best spots for the nightlife scene here in San Diego would have to be the ones that play latino music such as: Toro, Onyx, El Chingon and Mr Tempo.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I couldn’t have done anything without my parents. I wouldn’t be the person I am today and know everything I know without them. My parents sacrificed everything for me. They always wanted the best for me and made it happen. I owe everything to them.
My first mentor, Alex Johnson who allowed me to start my career as a Personal Trainer at his gym fresh out of college. I am forever grateful for the opportunity. The rest of the trainers: Maurice, Nate, Applewhite and Pat, who have treated me as one of their own and taught so much when I was just starting out.
Shout out to my first business mentors, Gavin White and Alex Pardo. Who helped me kick start my online coaching business.
And of course my current business mentors Brian, Cole and the rest of the PT Dom coaches who have helped me scale my coaching business to what it is today.
And last but not least, my girlfriend Leeza who holds it down at home with our baby and is a huge contributor to my success.
