We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean Starky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sean, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
No one would employee me so I decided to employee myself.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve got this mental illness when it comes to gear. I can’t deal with shitty gear, I have a phobia. The activities I am into, backcountry skiing, mountain biking and bodysurfing wedge you can’t have your gear failing on you. Especially with the backcountry skiing, when you are skiing in a no fall zone on light weight touring gear it better not fail you. So I think I have a unique perspective of fins. They need to perform and be durable. My standards are high when it comes to gear. I run the same shitty wrangler jeans everyday, but my ski touring bindings are handmade in Italy. Yucca Fins was purely selfish, I wanted badass fins for me and my homies and I figured I could sell enough to break even. The rest is just gravy, you don’t get into making swim fins to get rich.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Have to be Wedge on a nice medium size south swell. Link up ay my house, jump on a couple of my vintage Raleigh town bikes and rip down to Wedge via the board walk, great people watching. Stop for an espresso and talk about it.

Wedge has a great scene. The last of the great Newport Beach dirtbags still can be found lurking the Wedge Jetty. Honestly I am not sure what I enjoy most, chewing the fat with the boys or getting tubes.

I would have to vouch for my friend, the Wedge Crew isn’t the most welcoming bunch and you only get one or two guest passes a season. Hopefully catch some waves and throw some stones. We have our own version of bocce ball we play down at the beach and we take it as serious as the wave riding.

Bike up to Mothers Cafe probably sip another espresso and talk about the day.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Anton Newcombe from Brian Jonestown Massacre, I came across his program at an early age and I really respected that he gave zero fucks and never sold out. People don’t want the same boring shit, they want something original and new.

I come from a very very blue collar humble family. Proud hard working people. So the idea to me owning a business that didn’t require me breaking my body to earn living was very foreign to me. The only college schooling I have is in plumbing. I worked on boats after high school and the captain I worked for Mike Marshall now my business partner in Yucca was the one who gave me the confidence to go for it and start Yucca Fins. He’s the older brother I never had and taught me to take chances.
