We had the good fortune of connecting with Ry Ryan-Lim and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ry, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to create a gym environment that allowed our members get everything they needed for a happy and healthy lifestyle, whether that is from our workouts, treatment options, meal plans, or a place to feel safe and loved.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My journey actually started with a weight loss journey of my own, way before the thought of opening a gym crossed my mind. I used to weigh over 300lbs! I was constantly in pain, depressed, unable to breathe, and had zero self-esteem. I finally had enough, so I cleaned up my diet, started exercising, and immediately fell in love with the environment of the gym and the empowerment of looking and feeling strong. After finishing my first few years in the healthcare field, working my way up the nursing path, I quickly felt unfulfilled and frustrated working for a system that set patients up for failure. Many of my patients had been prescribed medications for curable diseases or manageable pain, and had no idea how to eat properly, let alone know what to if they stepped foot in a gym. Patient education was limited to how to take their pills, and not giving them the tools they needed to reverse or improve their condition. I started out as a CrossFit and rugby coach before finally getting my NASM in 2015. Once I moved to San Diego in 2016, I took the plunge and decided to concentrate on my fitness career full-time. I started out at a corporate gym, and was able to branch out on my own after two years. I opened The Experience a year to the date I left that corporate gym. Now we can boast that we are the only openly LGBT-owned gym in San Diego, offering a safe space for ALL to work towards your fitness goals!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’re beach bums for sure. My wife and I love going to any of our local beaches, but our favorite place to go is OB. We love all the restaurants and breweries and places to catch the sunset! We frequent Wonderland the most, but we also love The Holding Company, OB Noodlehouse, and Margaritas! You can also see us during the summer at OB Dog Beach with our dog, Xena.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Absolutely! Chad Yarvitz with Xplicit Fitness is our next door neighbor, and he’s been an amazing mentor and friend. Shoutout to you, my brother!
