We had the good fortune of connecting with Ruby G and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ruby, why did you pursue a creative career?
I wasn’t always on the path toward a creative career. Even though I’ve always been good at singing, performing in front of others terrified me, so I didn’t focus much on music for a long time. For my career, I knew I wanted to help people, so I moved to New York in 2014 to work in special education while pursuing music on the side. I was fortunate enough to partake in an artist development program with like-minded performers, where I started performing more and writing my own songs. The more I performed, the more I realized how alive it made me feel—bringing people joy with my voice brought me joy in return. A life-changing experience on The Voice confirmed it was time to prioritize music. I left my full-time teaching job, moved back to San Diego in 2022, and fully committed to my creative path. Now, I’m performing, teaching voice lessons, writing music, and recording—finding the freedom and self-expression I’d been craving.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m incredibly proud of where I am today. It took me a long time to face my fears of performing and fully dedicate myself to music. Being a voice teacher has allowed me to continue working with kids, which I love, while also helping them navigate their own musical journeys. I especially enjoy working with anxious students because I know exactly how they feel, and I love guiding them through their fears.

As an artist, I’ve worked hard to develop my sound—a blend of R&B, jazz, and pop—and I strive to write music that people can truly connect with. I recently released a single called “You and Me” which is streaming on all platforms! Being an artist does come with challenges. I’m still new to running my own business doing this full-time, and I wear many hats: performer, songwriter, teacher, manager, promoter, social media newbie, band wrangler, photographer, videographer—you name it! Balancing all of these roles while making time to refine my craft is an ongoing process, but despite the challenges, being a singer has been the most fulfilling job of my life so far.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Number one is definitely the beaches! You can have an Encinitas beach day-head to the main drag, take a walk along the coast, grab tacos at the Taco stand, and head over to Moonlight Beach, and after head over to the Roxy and see who is playing music that day. Another day you can grab coffee from Birdrock Coffee Roasters in Torrey Pines, then hike the Torrey Pines Beach trail and grab a sandwich at Board N Brew after. Some favorite music spots: Lou Lou’s, The Belly Up, The Quartyard.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate my shoutout to The Voicebox, now known as Audio Angel Artist Development Studio, run by Ekela Pendetta. This was where I spent years developing my artistry in New York. With Ekela’s mentorship and the support of a dedicated group of performing artists, I gained confidence, honed my skills, released my first single, and even made it on TV! It was the launch pad for my career as a singer, performer, and songwriter.
