We had the good fortune of connecting with Roman Lane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Roman, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
It’s always been about capitalizing on momentum. For each service I’ve started whether film production & editing, website design, music production, or songwriting – I always focused quality first. Each of these markets are widely over-saturated. Quality comes from understanding your “why” and also refining how you get the job done. Once you have solved that, selling quality is easy, because you don’t have to “sell” anything. You simply outreach, and provide value. And that’s always at the center of my services no matter the industry or medium.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
So I currently am an independent songwriter/music producer based in San Diego, CA. I’m currently affiliated with HRDRV music label founded by Mickey Shiloh. I think my ear for quality sound, consistency and honesty in the music space has earned respect from many of my peers. I’m most excited about my new pursuit in songwriting. I’m always looking for challenges and this is by far the biggest yet for me. I got to where I am from working independently in film production since 2014. This started when I lived in Louisville, KY and eventually working for WAVE 3 News/NBC as a Brand Manager. WAVE is where I earned my ADDY and two EMMYs. I overcame all of my challenges by studying the greats before me, keeping my mentors close and taking very calculated risks. This biggest thing I want people to take away from my journey is that with God and a curious mind, there’s absolutely nothing you can’t do. No matter where everyone starts from, when it comes to excellence, everyone has to do their time.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d probably take them up the road to Los Angeles. But to answer this it really depends upon the interests of the person I’m entertaining. That’s what I love about LA, it has something for everyone. I know of a few hidden nightclubs in downtown LA, of course you have to hit Santa Monica beach, there’s great eating spots all over and of course I’d take them to the music studio 🙂
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Absolutely. My God first and foremost. My parents and family next. And specifically Antonio Pantoja, who was an excellent mentor for me. Erik Branch, Liberty Brady and Kris Baete also helped refine me professionally. As far as giving me an opportunity in Los Angeles, it would definitely go to my mentor “PKal” and Mickey Shiloh, without those two, I would not have picked up the pace as quickly within music once I transitioned from film.
