We had the good fortune of connecting with Rob Martinez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rob, what do you attribute your success to?
Without a doubt, our team and thriving culture are the most important factors behind our success. We affectionately refer to our associates as “Shipwarriors”, and each provides our clients with the best service and results in our industry. We focus on HIRING right, not only making sure we have the right person to hop on the Shipware bus, but that we understand their behavioral needs and drives to ensure we find the right seat for them on the bus. Prospective hires aren’t even interviewed if there isn’t a strong match between their drives and the successful behaviors required by the position. We’re all about employee ENGAGEMENT. We’ve developed several employee-led Committees, and we provide lots of opportunities for feedback. We utilize TinyPulse, an engagement and communication platform in which leaders get to ask hard questions with anonymous employee grades and comments. We’re also big on making sure that EVERY employee is able to measure and understand their IMPACT on the organization. Knowing where you fit in – and that you make a DIFFERENCE – aids in positioning hard work and effort with positive associations (accomplishment, achievement, impact, belonging) instead of negative (overworked, stressed, burnout, etc.). COMMUNICATION is super important, and each team member has a DAILY meeting with the department lead and teammates. Daily calls keeps everyone aligned and ensures consistent collaboration, sharing, and learning. Moreover, we’re not hierarchical, but rather, we maintain an open door policy and encourage, no, covet, feedback and ideas. We high five mistakes because it helps us fail forward and improve, versus the back-stabbing, finger pointing, blaming you get at many organizations. RECOGNTION is very important, and we’ve developed multiple opportunities to GIVE and RECEIVE recognition including a monthly all-teams Zoom meeting to allow peers to highlight others in front of the organization. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT is encouraged and measured. Employees want to move forward, grow, learn new skills, see a path to promotion, add new bullet points to resumes, learn how to be more efficient and effective, etc. All contributes to lower burn out. Investing in automation to make peoples’ jobs less tedious, less repetitious, higher quality and efficient – each moves us closer to the goal. Shared connection through VALUES is important, and helps prevent burnout and attrition. Our values are: 1. Courageous Transparency 2. Continuous Improvement 3. Results-oriented Teamwork 4. Entrepreneurial Ownership 5. Grit Over Quit Obviously, I LOVE my team, and I’m passionate about leading our company forward to limitless successes!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?

Shipware’s cloud-based reporting platform delivers powerful analytics for greater spend management visibility empowering clients to make intelligent cost-saving transportation decisions. I’m proud of our teams’ growth and accomplishments. Shipware is a multiple recipient of the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Businesses and is recognized as an Inc. Best Place to Work in the United States. One of the biggest challenges is related to our meteoric growth. How do you maintain culture and quality in hyper-growth mode. At 50 employees, Shipware’s doubled its team size in a year. It requires consistent effort and daily intentionality, as well as a team committed to courageous transparency, teamwork, entrepreneurial ownership, continuous improvement, and radical effort/results. As leaders of Shipware, we realize we don’t have it all figured out. We fully recognize that management, at times, in spite of its best intentions, can get it wrong. So we encourage employees to help shape the company’s culture and direction by contributing ideas, and taking an entrepreneurial approach to getting things done. Company-wide success means that every ShipWarriors can — at the end of every day — look themselves in the mirror and ask, “did I give it all I had?” If yes, we won’t have to worry about finding success. It will find us!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
San Diego is one of the great cities of the world! With it’s year-round perfect weather and warm and friendly inhabitants, San Diego is truly special. From its family themed parks like SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, to its parks, hiking trails and beaches. Each community within San Diego offers its own treasures to be explored. So many outstanding places to eat, drink and be merry throughout the year. While I myself am still exploring after 19 years, here are a few epic experiences: *Paraglide and float above the cliffs, waves and sandy beaches at the Torrey Pines Glider Port. *Golf at the world-famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, and take in the spectacular ocean views of the Par-3 Third hole on the South Course. *Enjoy a 10-course meal of a lifetime paired with amazing wines from around the world at Addison restaurant at the Fairmont Grand Del Mar, only one of two AAA Five Diamond rated dining establishments. *Grab your beach cruiser (or rent a bike) and cruise the 3.5 mile Mission Beach/Pacific Beach Boardwalk. *Enjoy a guided cruise at sunset on the San Diego harbor; or better yet, rent a motorboat and cruise up to the US Midway, duck under the Coronado Bay Bridge, watch the Navy Seals training, or just take in the orange reflection of the setting sun as reflected by the skyscrapers along the best skyline in the country. *Explore the many bars and restaurants in the Gaslamp Quarter, and when live baseball is back in action, head over to Petco Park to take in a Padres game. There are literally HUNDREDS more world-class experiences this great city has to offer!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
