Meet Rita Spiegel | Art by Rita Spiegel

We had the good fortune of connecting with Rita Spiegel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Rita, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
My business was born out of two of my greatest passions: art and dogs. Throughout my life, I have been an artist at heart, expressing myself through drawing, photography, and painting. Dogs, particularly those who have shared their lives with me, have always been a significant source of inspiration. These two loves naturally intertwined, leading me down a path I hadn’t anticipated.
The image of Cocoa’s portrait resonated with many, capturing the interest and admiration of people far and wide. Friends, family, and strangers alike began reaching out, asking if I could paint portraits of their beloved pets. This outpouring of requests marked the inception of my pet portrait business.
With each commission, my business grew, fueled by the heartfelt connections I made with pet owners who wanted to immortalize their furry companions through my art. This venture allows me to blend creativity with the joy of celebrating the special bond between humans and their pets.
What started as a simple act of sharing my love for Cocoa has blossomed into a fulfilling business. Each pet portrait is more than just a painting—it’s a tribute to the unique joy and companionship that pets bring into our lives. My journey continues to be enriched by the stories and personalities of the pets I have the privilege to paint.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Watercolor painting has always held a special place in my heart. The way different layers of colors come together to breathe life into a subject is truly magical. This is particularly true when creating a pet portrait. Each stroke of the brush captures the essence of a beloved animal, transforming blank paper into a vibrant memory.
In my paintings, I strive to capture the spirit of each pet. The eyes, in particular, are my favorite feature to paint. They are the window to the soul and truly bring the painting to life. I believe that this attention to detail sets my work apart from other artists. The eyes are not just a detail; they are the focal point that imbues the canvas with emotion and character.
Many people say that watercolor is a challenging medium to master, and to some extent, I agree. However, this challenge is part of what makes watercolor so rewarding. Like any skill, mastering watercolor requires practice and guidance from professionals. There are numerous tips and tricks to learn, many of which can only be discovered with the help of a teacher rather than a tube of paint.
What I want the world to know about my art is that I paint memories. These memories can be cherished for all occasions—be it a gift, a wedding, a special celebration, welcoming a new pet into the family, or a memorial when a beloved pet passes on. I’m here to work with you to create that special painting you will treasure for years to come.
Whether you’re commemorating a moment or honoring a cherished pet, my watercolor portraits are more than just paintings; they are timeless keepsakes that capture the love and joy shared with your furry companions.
