We had the good fortune of connecting with Rene Magana and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rene, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?

Passion for what you do and persistence! When you become an entrepreneur, you come across many obstacles that only you can resolve. There is no guidebook to follow other than to keep going and not giving up specially for someone like me that decided to drop out from college after discovering the art of woodworking back in 2013.
I started helping family members with different projects such as little dog houses and cutting boards. After a while, people started following my personal social media where I posted pictures of the things I made and that’s where I knew this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
It’s been five years since I am a full-time entrepreneur doing what I love the most: furniture!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

When making furniture, you are never satisfied with the result and you always want to do better. That’s what I call passion for what you do. I think this is very important because if you didn’t have that gut feeling you wouldn’t push yourself into becoming skilled and professional.
The greatest satisfaction of my profession is being able to physically see and feel what you only had in your mind or on a piece of paper. The fact that your body and your mind have the ability of creating is simply amazing!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

A huge part of what I do is thanks to my wood design teacher Erin and the wood shop technician Sheila at Southwestern College, where I had the opportunity to take wood design 1 and wood design 2 .
I was also the teacher’s assistant for two semesters, where I had the opportunity to help out other students and work on personal projects given that I had access to the woodshop.
