Meet RaeAnn Stout

We had the good fortune of connecting with RaeAnn Stout and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi RaeAnn, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk has definitely shaped my life, but I’ve never thought of myself as someone who takes big, flashy risks.
For me it’s usually been more about making a hard decision when I know something in my life needs to change.
Moving from Minnesota to California was probably the biggest risk I’ve ever taken. I left everything familiar behind. My family, the place I grew up, all of it. There were a lot of unknowns and honestly it was uncomfortable.
But I knew I needed a fresh start.
Looking back, I really don’t think I would have started my business if I hadn’t made that move.
Moving forced me to grow up in a lot of ways. It made me more independent. It pushed me to trust myself more. And it gave me space to think about what I actually wanted my life to look like.
Starting my business was another leap. There wasn’t a guaranteed paycheck and there definitely wasn’t a clear path.
But by then I had already proven to myself that I could handle change and figure things out.
Now when I think about risk, I don’t chase it. I just ask myself if it lines up with the kind of life I’m trying to build.
If it does, I’m willing to get uncomfortable.
And honestly when I look back, every big shift in my life came from choosing growth instead of staying comfortable.
Moving to California was the one that started everything.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Stout Bookkeeping really came from a desire to help business owners feel less overwhelmed by their finances.
Before I started my business, I worked in restaurants, retail, and IT operations management. I’ve seen firsthand how hard business owners work, and how easy it is for the financial side of things to become something people avoid.
Most people don’t start their business because they love bookkeeping. They start it because they’re passionate about what they do. The numbers usually get pushed to the side until they start causing stress.
The way I look at bookkeeping is a little different. It’s not just about categorizing transactions. It’s about creating clarity.
When your financials are accurate and up to date, you can actually make decisions without constantly second guessing yourself. You can see where your money is going. And when tax season comes around, you’re not scrambling to figure everything out.
Integrity is also really important to me. I won’t hide expenses and I won’t mask transactions. Clean books protect both the business owner and me. That kind of honesty builds long term trust, and that’s something I’m really proud of.
Getting here definitely wasn’t easy. Starting a business from scratch means you’re building systems, finding clients, learning marketing, and wearing every hat in the beginning. There were plenty of moments where I questioned things.
But I focused on doing great work for the clients I had. I kept learning. I asked questions. I leaned into the community around me. Over time the referrals started growing, and my confidence grew with it.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned is that consistency matters more than intensity. You don’t need overnight success. You need steady effort, strong relationships, and a commitment to doing things the right way.
What I want people to know about my brand is that I’m more than just a bookkeeper. I’m a financial partner. I really care about helping small business owners understand their numbers and build something sustainable.
When small businesses do well, the whole community benefits. That’s the bigger picture for me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was coming into town for a week, we’d keep it very North County.
One of the first mornings would definitely be breakfast at High Low at the Oceanside Pier. Coffee, breakfast, the ocean right there. Then we’d walk the beach and just catch up. That’s one of my favorite kinds of mornings.
We’d spend some time in Carlsbad Village too. Just wandering around, popping into little shops, no real rush. One night we’d grab dinner at Jalisco Cantina and then walk over to the beach path to watch the sunset. That combo never gets old. Good food, salty air, and that golden hour glow.
We’d probably do some slow drives along the coast too. Windows down, music on. That’s honestly one of my favorite simple things to do here.
At some point we’d hike Calavera. I love getting outside and moving, and the views up there are always worth it. Being outdoors is how I recharge.
We’d spend some time in Vista too because I really love the small business energy there. It feels creative and really grounded at the same time.
And if there’s live music anywhere nearby, we’re going. Music is a huge part of my life, so ending a night that way would feel pretty perfect.
Honestly it wouldn’t be about packing the week full of stuff. It would just be slow mornings, beach walks, good food, music, and real conversations.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would absolutely dedicate my shoutout to my husband and the small business community here in North County San Diego.
Moving across the country was a huge leap, and having a partner who believed in me through all of it made a big difference. Starting a business comes with a lot of uncertainty. There are long days, moments of self doubt, and times where you question what you’re doing.
He’s been steady through all of it. His support gave me the confidence to build something from the ground up.
I also feel really grateful for the small business community here. When I moved to California, I didn’t have a built in network. I had to put myself out there and start from scratch.
The encouragement, referrals, collaborations, and friendships I’ve found through chambers, networking groups, and other entrepreneurs have meant more than I expected.
It’s easy to think business success is something you do on your own, but the truth is none of us build anything alone.
I’m here because of the people who believed in me, trusted me, and encouraged me to keep going.
