We had the good fortune of connecting with Rachel Black and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Rachel, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
I think work balance for me has evolved over my 20+ year Beauty Industry career. When I first began, I worked long hours to build my clientele, basically trying to appease everyone’s schedule. I was hungry and motivated. As the years went by, I discovered that investing my time and energy into those who weren’t a good fit for me was counterproductive. Also, having the revelation that you can’t constantly work and not enjoy the fruits of your labor was eye-opening for me. Then, adding in raising children and fulfilling their needs and activities will really teach you how to juggle! It’s sink or swim! Being an entrepreneur made me a better parent and being a parent made me a better entrepreneur. Now that I’m an empty nester, I have a lot more free time on my hands, but I’m older and more settled with less to prove. My goal now is to work less and make more money.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I actually began my Beauty Industry career as a licensed Manicurist and later went on to become a licensed Esthetician. Obtaining my Esthetics license was a game changer for my career and having this license positioned me to spread my wings because of the amount of knowledge I gained about the skin. This knowledge empowered me to excel in the certification classes I would later take due to already having a working understanding of how the new service would effect the skin. I absolutely love this industry and the fact that it’s constantly evolving. The skin and the way it functions totally excites me! You can apply a serum, salve, mask, or cream to the skin, and it will transform. You can mold and shape the body with your hands or tools, and it will transform. Oftentimes the transformation isn’t instantaneous but whether it is or isn’t, it’s still magical

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, I live in Indianapolis, IN so we would have to hit all the infamous Indy landmarks such as The Children’s Museum and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Then we would definitely have to grab a bite from Barbecue Heaven, Chicken Scratch, Longs Donuts, or Missing Brick Pizza. Can’t forget about shopping at some of my fave places like 28 Boutique and Mother’s Earth then swing by my Studio, Glamazon Body & Beauty Wellness Studio for a little self-care!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mentor, Buntricia Bastian, was a huge influence and inspiration to me and my career. She unfortunately passed away February 2019 and it left a huge void in my life. I hold the things she taught me extremely close to my heart. There are days I surely wish heaven had a phone to call her up to ask her advice or share in my exciting moments. I miss her dearly
