We had the good fortune of connecting with Pedro Hoyos and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Pedro, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always looked for new and interesting projects.
I had being working in an innovative telecom Project for 17 years, widely involved in the corporate and government Market in Mexico.
While traveling to several parts of the world to visits vendors, expos and clients (USA, England, Spain, India, China), we noticed that a movement to shift from industrial produced Distilled Spirits to better quality craft ones was going strong. In Mexico you could find producers of traditional craft spirits like Mezcal, Raicilla, Sotol, and Tequila. No one was making Craft Vodka, Gin, Bourbon or liquors. So my Partner Alberto and my self decided to buy a small Still and do some testing.
Baja California is the capital of Mexican Wine, Craft Beer and innovative cuisine, so based on our results and good location, also close to the California market (USA) We decided to establish a company and start producing to sell.
It has become a true adventure.
What should our readers know about your business?
We started this project as a Hobie at my partner garage, cooling our still with the water from a Koi fish pond. When we ware starting our first runs in 2015 we were the only crazy guys distilling Gin, everybody else was distilling Mezcal, Raicilla, Tequila and other traditional spirits. In fact not that many people drank Gin in bar in does days. Most of what we had to do and still do today is teach our clients, and anyone willing to hear and taste some free gin is preach about craft spirits.
Now we are in a pint at which we are experimenting with new spirits, RTD’s and Liquors this is what we most like, experimenting and crating new drinks, Thats is what we most like.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This has been a team project, in which everyone has played a significant role. My partner Alberto Paz es an Engineer, Fritz Torres -also a partner- with The image designe and lots of Ideas, my wife Talia with finances, Marcos with the day to day production, Aidee for the follow up of the clients. Iliana for being a grate ambassador, and my sons for helping with numbering the bottles and learning what it takes to build something in the process.
Now, this had not being posible if it wasn’t for our clients, now friends that have believed and accepted our products, and permitted us to be a part of their projects. We will always be thankful to Pablo Campos, from Tras Horizonte Restaurant for being our first client.
