Meet Patty Pancak3s | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Patty Pancak3s and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Patty, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
It may sound dramatic, but I think of risk as a matter of life or death: will this decision lead me down a path that will eventually kill me? It makes things incredibly black and white for me. Within this perspective, risks are judged on whether or not it’ll affect my cost of living (physically and mentally). Sure, I might be rejected, or I make mistakes in my creativity, or even just making a fool of myself in general; but I won’t die from any of these things. Rather, these are seen as opportunities with this perspective; and due to the journey it takes to get to that point in time: can be that much more rewarding once achieved.
In the end, understanding that we are all humans simply existing in this period of time on this planet makes things like taking that risk rather insignificant.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art has been developed through travel and life experiences on the streets; it’s rough, unrefined, and full of mistakes. Ironic, though, as my career began in the exact opposite direction. Choosing to be more of my authentic self, I’ve been taking a path towards creating two dimensional illustrations on a three dimensional canvas. This direction is definitely not easy; I’ve had to carve out an entirely new lifestyle for this journey. However, this new lifestyle (as wild and crazy as it is) has been a fantastic ride and the people I’ve been meeting on this new road has been an absolute dream.
If there’s one thing I want you to take away from this, it’s to encourage creatives to be their authentic selves. To embrace their obscure interests and (within reason) feed these niche passions.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to explore places and I absolutely love sharing spots to go! However, I have friends of all backgrounds, so there’s usually some form of customization to this madness. To start, I’ll take anyone and everyone out to coffee (my favourite!) In the city, I’d probably begin with James, Mostra, Bird Rock, or Portal. Izola would most likely be a coffee and simple breakfast place, they have the *best* croissants (and this is someone who’s spent some time in Paris). The Donut Bar would be another good simple brekkie, that Homer bathroom alone would be a good incentive lol Breakfast places would be Richard Walker’s Pancake House, Por Vida, or Fig Tree. Lunches would be Board & Brew, Biggie’s Burgers, Nishiki Ramen, Loving Hut, or Flavors of East Africa. Dinners would usually be at one of the many amazing breweries here.
And the activities could be anywhere from going to all the types of museums/galleries, having a beach day over at Belmont Park, or a park day at Balboa Park, going to a sports game or a live music concert, or simply touring around to all the breweries. There’s honestly so many things to do here.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Ah man my biggest shout-out is to my close friends. Some from high school (Mango and Sour Oreo) who started their journeys alongside mine, and all the beautiful people I’ve met along the way (Kitty, *the* LSP, Simba-kun, and Pine to name a few cause THERE’S SO MANY). The artists I’ve gotten to discover as well as meet (Ashley Wood, Tim Bradstreet, Phil Hale, Jock to name a few) have been incredibly encouraging for me on my journey.
