Meet Olga Savchenko | The owner and brand florist of Dragonfly Floristic

We had the good fortune of connecting with Olga Savchenko and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olga, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Before becoming a flower designer I was working as a CEO of a big retail company in Ukraine. I was fully devoted to that job, even though I’ve always known it wasn’t my dream job or calling of any kind. Like many creatives, I had to choose between following my dream and calling or choosing the option that would pay my bills, even though it doesn’t fulfill my artistic needs. After 7 years of emotional ups and downs, self-exploration, and all kinds of crises I left that job for good. I’ve always known that art and communication are something I naturally gravitate toward, so when I somehow ended up at the floristic workshop to help me deal with depression after leaving a big part of my life behind I realized that I found my true self. Flower art is a medium that combines my two passions, it gives the artists an opportunity to communicate with people using the language of flowers, translating their emotions and feeling into the flower designs. My dream wasn’t just to sell flowers but to create arrangements that would have their own meaning and history.
After that workshop, I started attending classes and developing my skills, so when my family and I moved to the USA I knew that I would start a business with a very particular philosophy. Seeing how developed the flower industry is here, I knew that there would be a high demand for local flower services which was only confirmed once I realized that there isn’t much artistic floristry available.
I create a unique flower arrangement for every customer after having a chat with the sender who shares the details of the event, their relationship to the recipient, their likes and dislikes, etc. When creating a design, I try to convey the emotions of the sender to the recipient to translate all their thoughts into this gesture. This allows me to get to know a lot of my customers, remember their stories and be more helpful in the future for the following orders for them. I might not remember their name, but I sure remember the flowers!
Every day people leave reviews saying that they’ve never received flowers like the ones I arrange for them and these reviews serve as a confirmation that I’m at the right place doing the right thing.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a floral designer and my main goal is to bring beauty and positive emotions to people. I like to create unique flower arrangements and bouquets. I have experience working in a regular California flower shop and I learned that most shops work in a partnership with big corporations which persistently guide them through their business, They tell them what designs to make, which flowers to use, and what kinds of vases to buy. And it is not bad for making money. But I wanted people to know that with my flowers they receive special treats such as a personal approach, attention to detail, and unique custom flower design.
My regular customers always know that I will do my best to create arrangements for them or their loved ones.
The hardest part for me as an artist and perfectionist is to be proud of myself and praise myself. I always think that there is something I could do better, faster, or nicer. That is something that I am still learning.
The most enjoyable part of my business is of course that I can do what I love to do, and People. Those precious moments when recipients first see the flowers, when they wonder who send them such beauty and when they say that they never received anything like that before, and, of course, when they come back to me with the next orders. It is priceless!
Also, I like to develop myself as a floral artist by participating in different kinds of floral events, exhibitions, and floral shows. I don’t want to stop learning and self-developing.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We have a lot of parks and nice trails to hike here in San Francisco Bay Area. Of course, I would take them to the beach, Dog beaches can bring a lot of fun to those who love dogs. I would visit Pacific Catch in Cupertino for Margharita and coconut shrimps and walk throw Santana Row in San Jose.
Absolutely must visit is Monterey and its picturesque beaches and trails along the ocean.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
