We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Macklem and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
As cliche as it may sound, the concept for my children’s book My Shiny Chakras came to me in a dream. As a child care provider and yoga enthusiast, I’ve always encouraged mindfulness and positive affirmations with children. I believe that the chakra system needs more general public attention so simplifying the ideas for children seemed like an obvious first step. So one morning I awoke and the book was clear as day in my mind. I went to my computer and wrote the entire thing, including the format and visual concept.

I must admit that this happened about five years ago, and it has been a long road to find the perfect illustrator and printer to make this dream a reality. I definitely had to rely on divine timing and patience to see this come to fruition. But now the book is here I am so pleased with the final product! The process has been a labor of love and a group effort, as all the children featured in the book are friend’s of mine whose parents took photos which I then sent one-by-one to my terrific illustrator. We slowly composed this book through FaceTime calls during the 2020 lockdown.

I am now in the sales and marketing stage and trying to remind myself that things take time and patience is rewarded. Please check out the book at www.myshinychakras.com

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a beach girl and Ocean Beach is my favorite. Such a fun, quaint community with great people watching. I also think Old Town is a unique place to explore for some San Diego history and a Mexican vibe. Little Italy is always recommended on my itinerary, especially during the holidays for great decor and a romantic stroll. My favorite places for live music are The Casbah and The Music Box, just the right crowd size to enjoy touring artists!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Nick Young, the illustrator for My Shiny Chakras is a digital artist that I met though a mutual friend one happenstance evening at Starlite bar and restaurant where he worked. He has been a true pleasure to work with!
