We had the good fortune of connecting with Nhila Kliber and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nhila, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?

My thought process behind starting my own business was driven by fear and began before I even realized it. If you asked me eight years ago what I did for a living, I would happily tell you “I’m a stay-at-home mom ensuring that my kids will be raised right and grow up to be decent human beings”. I would probably follow that comment with my desire to get back into business one day after they’re both in high school.

My seemingly “perfect life” and sense of security changed seven years ago when I found myself facing divorce with an eight- and four-year-old. Fortunately, I still had business connections and was able to find a sales position in the mental health industry (Ironic because I felt like I was having a mental breakdown myself). I was able to work partly from home which helped my mostly full-time parenting schedule. While I was helping other people, I realized I wasn’t really helping myself or my family especially in the way I needed to. The transition from being in control of my daily schedule to someone else controlling it wasn’t my cup of tea. It didn’t take long for me to arrive at the decision that I needed the freedom and flexibility to work for myself. I knew my children were paying attention and would eventually learn by watching how I found solutions to the challenges I faced.

In 2018 I decided to take a leap of faith and get my real estate license. The first year was a whirlwind trying to learn a new language and become an entrepreneur-something I was unfamiliar with in the business world. I closed a handful of transactions, but it wasn’t enough to launch my business or create the income I needed. A year and a half in, Covid struck, and I saw my business come to a halt which scared me to death and made me realize I needed to find a solution very quickly. The competition in real estate is fierce. Everyone knows roughly 10-12 Realtors so I needed to make a big move and align myself with a strong name and brand, otherwise I wouldn’t survive. I knew I had to figure this out quickly.

I had lived in my neighborhood for 20 years by this time and was familiar with another Realtor in the neighborhood who I was a little envious of but completely respected. Each month I received her newsletter and found myself wondering what she was doing to be so successful and how great it would be to sit and talk with her. One day, while walking my dog, I stopped to buy some handmade jewelry her daughter was selling on their lawn. It was then I met Angela Meakins (and Associates) with Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, a very successful agent with one of the most prestigious brokerages in the world. The connection was instant, and the chemistry was perfect. We discovered quickly how much we had in common and that each of us had different talents, that if combined, would make an amazing combination. It took only 3 short weeks for us to decide to become business partners. This was by far the best business decision I have made in my career thus far. When two like-minded professionals come together for the greater good the future is limitless.

What have I learned through this journey? It’s ok to be vulnerable and ask for help. People want to help others and you may be surprised by how your request is fulfilled.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love our coastal communities especially Del Mar. We have so many wonderful beach cities and each one offers a totally different vibe and variety of restaurants. I would take my guests on a coastal binge. I would probably start the week with a visit to Coronado and each day visit a different city working our way up to Encinitas. My favorite must try restaurants would be Poseidan, Pacific Coast Grill, Fidel’s, and finally Bier Garden.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would be honored to give a shout out to my business partner, Angela Meakins (Angela Meakins and Associates)
