We had the good fortune of connecting with Nedra Flansburg and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nedra, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I can do better! I Know this business inside and out! I love the customer and with focus here, I will be successful! Plan my path….I just couldn’t see myself working for another company. I did think about Money, could I afford the risk? I fell in love with a cottage in the Village of Carlsbad and once I had the location everything fell into place.

I worked as a district manager for a big box retailer, and suddenly we went into bankruptcy! Brides dresses not delivered and me at 55 out of a job for the 1st time in my life! Corporations don’t allow you the freedom to do your own thinking and your greatest ideas or values are not generally looked at or implemented.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Passion for the customer. Something you do not see anymore is your hometown store owner, everyone knows and likes. We are small- 800 square feet but big on service. We spend the time to get to know who we are helping and then they helped us grow. Our reputation had to be sterling, our service world class, our store inviting, magical. Team, fun and friendly.
Getting going was tough, it takes time to build the 4 walls of a good business. The time is where people are not always built to own a business. The 1st 3 years I worked everyday. The business was always open. I would somedays not see a single customer but I was determined that If I wasn’t here someone might come by and with that logic. people started to stop when they walked by, checking us out, making appointments telling others. It was the word of mouth, local conversations that got Posh going. The Village of Carlsbad is very loyal and loves its small business. I had to learn the social media game and that wasn’t easy at 55 but I’m now addicted to instagram!

I now have 5 part-timers and take vacations!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Its a Thelma and Louise for us. a trip in a convertible up the coast to Big Sur. A stop in Santa Barbara for to my favorite winery, Fess Parke and the Elephant Seal’s. Dinner at the Coast Big Sur and the Post Ranch Inn for rest with amazing views! We would have to sneak a spa in there , my local favorite is Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My Bestie Annie. We have been friend forever and met while we working for the same Bridal company. She started as my mentor and then close friend. I worked Florida and She was here.

She’s a California gal and somehow I ended up moving here and we could spend time together. She was my sounding board.

She got me thru Cancer with laughter, wig shopping and making sure I never looked back!

So when I was devastated by my job loss, she lost her beloved husband, Annie focused on me not on herself. She helped design the layout for my store. Set up my pos and worked weekends with me even thought she had a full time job! I think the store helped her with the immense grief she was going thru. I could not have made it without her.

Today my business is successful and she is happily remarried!
