We had the good fortune of connecting with Nayeli-Milemny Gutierrez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nayeli-Milemny, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
‘Build It and they’ll come’ This is my favorite quote / affirmation I say to myself daily that my partner reassured me with when I first started my entrepreneurial journey.
When I was about to finish my Holistic Health Practitioner certification I started creating oil Infusions & various tinctures for myself and my family. I had just given birth to my first born so I made formulas that were very gentle for baby and provided support for my postpartum healing. I then realized I could probably sell these infusions to help other families who were going through similar life events.
In the beginning it felt so overwhelming and daunting because of the vision I had of where I wanted to take this business, but my partner would reassure me with ‘build it and they’ll come’ and so I built it, they came, and now we have a storefront !
What should our readers know about your business?
I own a Holistic Herbal Apothecary that started by a few tinctures and salves being created to help my family and little by little word of mouth spread on how effective my products were for various ailments and it just grew from there. I started by becoming a RegisteredYogaTeacher at the age of 15, discovering energetic medicine and seeing my future in opening up a Holistic Healing Center. I then started experimenting with Cannabis and learning about its chemical composition and then realized i can do the same with all herbs. I went to school to become a Holistic Health Practitioner specializing in Herbalism, and then trained in a clinical setting. This was not enough for me, even though I stay reading studies, I needed more in depth knowledge and finally realized i need to just become a Naturopathic Doctor. Every path lead to getting my ND which is what i’m currently going to school for. The thing im most proud of in the current moment is December 2021. I ran a black friday sale, got the keys to my new storefront, opened up 12/12/21, finished finals dec-15 very strongly, all while balancing home life with 3 little boys. I was able to overcome the biggest challenge of my life (December2021) by remembering the reason why I’m doing this to begin with. To open up a Holistic Health Clinic and educate the community in holistic nutrition/health. My business was built on a desire to find clean & safe alternatives to keeping my family healthy and feeling good and since it’s helped many families achieve the same.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would definitely take people to Barrio Logan. That’s the location of where i opening up my shop so i’d treat my friends to a delicious solar powered roasted coffee at Cafe Moto and then we would walk down Logan Ave checking out all the awesome small businesses in the area then making a stop at my shop. Then we’d talk and catch up and then we’d continue walking talking to all the homies on Logan ave. Then we would go eat at either Thai Taste 2 in Bonita or Supanee SD Thai on Shelter Island. Im such a capricorn so then I would say let’s go home and do a bonfire. If it’s the next day sunny and my friend is a bit athletic i’d take them to no surf beach in sunset cliffs, locals only hehe.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Janice Luna is a powerful community leader who helped me learn about community planning and program curation. She led the community leadership academy program which graduated from early December of 2021 which empowered me to participate in local politics and to create a holistic nutrition school program. She’s a prominent figure in the National City & Barrio Logan area and runs a non-profit called Mundo Gardens. She opened my eyes to the possibilities of making a difference in the community.
