We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Parker and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
The work I do is based in Somatics; soma meaning – the body as perceived from within. Tuning in and listening to the wisdom in the body as our guide to overall wellness, vitality and joy. Using the cues from pain and dysfunction in our body, health, and relationships, I support highly sensitive people to restore balance in these areas. Re-educating the nervous system and reprogramming bad habits to deepen core integrity in how we relate to & move through the world. Thus, InBody Wisdom was born.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For the past 21 years I have been following my “Heart Yes,” (which is also one major way I support clients, by teaching them to trust and follow this.) Even when it made no sense I listened to my heart. I left my hometown and moved across the country only knowing one person, on a whisper that told me to. I wound up getting a job as the research assistant to a teacher I had desired to study with. Years later, I left a job living & working at a world class spa, during a recession, when everyone told me I was crazy. I had no other job lined up or any idea why, I just heard my heart whisper it is time, and I listened. That opened up the world of healing through energy medicine & movement. I met all 3 of my major teachers and guides in the realms of tantra & conscious dance that year.
Each time I was willing to take the leap into the unknown, surrender to the uncertainty, trust grace & keep listening to my heart, I was guided and supported in the next steps. It wasn’t always easy, a couple times I went into debt to continue on my heart path. It was always calculated, not frivolous, however, from the outside looking in, I am sure many wondered if perhaps I’d truly lost it, lol.
As a result however, I started 2 businesses, co founding Ecstatic Dance San Diego in 2004, as well as my own business InBody Wisdom – facilitating somatic relating experiences, events and retreats, designed to deepen connection – to self (me), to other (you) and to all (we). I strongly feel that mastering emotional and relational intelligence has the potential to be the salve for much of the dis-ease and disconnection in our world today.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My favorite places in the city have to do with nature, movement, play, connection and sustainable, healthy living
Lunch at Nectarine Grove or Healthy Creations
A stroll through SRF Meditation Gardens and down to Swami’s beach
A hike through Elfin Forest
Ecstatic Dance San Diego
Dance Church Encinitas
Leucadia Farmers Market, (Poway and Vista get a special mention too)
San Dieguito Park for a picnic on the grass under the trees
If I am down south and or wanting city vibes, I’d stroll through Normal Heights. Possibly hit up Burger Lounge for a grass fed burger, before strolling down to Maya Moon Collective for decadent chocolate treats and connection.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
So many wise & heart-full beings have inspired, encouraged, and mentored me along my path these past 2 decades: Thomas Hubl, Leyolah Antarah, Gwendolyn Terra, Samantha Sweetwater, Paul Chek and Frank Carucci. Of course having a loving family including, my Mom and Dad who supported me even when they couldn’t begin to describe what I do, has been priceless.
