Meet Mike Sill | CEO & Co-founder of Sunday Scaries

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Sill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, how do you think about risk?
I have an extreme risk tolerance. When entering the CBD industry in 2017, my mom thought that the DEA was going to kick in my front door. Back then there was still confusion on whether or not the compound was a Schedule 1 narcotic or not. The 2014 Farm Bill (which legitimized the hemp industry) was in effect, but to say that the industry fell within a “gray area” would be an understatement.
Within risk lies huge opportunity. Entering the CBD arena during this state of uncertainty allowed Sunday Scaries to be 1st to market, which is extremely important for consumer perception in a new category. We were also able to take advantage of advertising platforms like Facebook and Google before they banned the substance and started flagging ads and restricting accounts. This inability to market CBD products still cripples the industry today but we continue to take other risks in the pursuit of scaling.
I’ve always been a risk taker and a thrill seeker, and I think it stems from the philosophical ideal that Osho captures well with his quote “life begins where fear ends.” At the end of the day, the second we were born we started dying. We all have a finite amount of time on this planet, so I figure I might as well take risks because the upside of success far outweighs the downside of failure. Especially considering failures are the stepping stones to success.
Jump off the ledge and build your wings on the way down.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
We are Sunday Scaries, a CBD company that helps you enjoy your days like you enjoy your coffee: without a nervous freaking breakdown. We sell stress relief products that are taken any time you are feeling self-doubt or overwhelmed. In a world full of information overdose, social expectations and digital isolation our products are needed more than ever. We are big advocates of mental health awareness and want to consistently remind our Scary Squad “don’t worry, you’re not alone.”
My Co-Founder, Beau Schmitt, and I started Sunday Scaries because of the overwhelming anxiety we felt in our personal and professional lives.
Personally, we missed out on a ton of vacations, weddings, and social gatherings because we were grinding ourselves to the bone and shackled to our work. Even with the time that we did take off from work, we were so consumed by the pressure to succeed that we were never able to enjoy the moment with family and friends. We have both lost loved ones to mental health issues and we know what it’s like ourselves to feel isolated and alone.
Professionally, we have suffered many hardships together as business partners. The entrepreneurial road is not a smooth one and while we’ve gained thick alligator skin in the process, there are still times where we may feel overwhelmed or frustrated. We realize that running this business is not only helping others overcome their self-doubt, but it also gives us a higher purpose to be the best versions of ourselves. We truly care about the success of this company and the Scary Squad as a whole.
We deal with anxiety too, it sucks. We’re devoted to creating a community around de-stigmatizing it and encouraging transformation, and we’re having a ton of fun doing it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Eat – Nolita Hall, Barbusa, Animae, Himitsu, King & Queen Drink – The Reading Club, Craft & Commerce, Shore Club
Visit – Everyday California (adventure and surf shop in La Jolla), Iron Mountain (hiking), Torrey Pines & Coronado G.C. (golf) and Tijuana.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is dedicated to Entrepreneur’s Organization, a global non-profit network comprised of 14,000 like-minded leaders across 61 countries. The EO chapter in San Diego is 200 members strong. Within our chapter we have mastermind groups called forums which are made up of 6-12 members.
The forum I am a part of is called Limitless. We chose the name on a retreat in Costa Rica because we all advocate the same goal that absolutely anything is possible and that we can break through any growth barriers that are placed in our way. Yup, like the drug in the movie.
My forum mates test me, question me and provide me extreme value in my business and personal life, but more than anything they have my back. This unwavering challenging and support has allowed me to become the best version of myself as I continue to evolve while fighting the good fight in making my dreams a reality..
