We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Reeder and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, can you share a quote or affirmation with us?
Kurt Vonnegut, “I tell you, we are here on Earth to fart around, and don’t let anybody tell you different.” It might seem like a silly quote but, when you own your own business, especially during these times, it’s important to realize crazy, difficult things will be thrown your way. If you can somehow keep things in perspective, not take yourself too seriously, and take a deep breath, it goes a long way.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a boutique boxing gym in the heart of North Park, San Diego. There are two sides to my business: Parkinson’s and Non-Parkinson’s. We offer non-contact Parkinson’s boxing classes, and it is in this spirit that the overall community has evolved. I am most proud of our Parkinson’s program. They beat up the disease through their hard work every day. The amazing part is that our non-Parkinson’s clients actually volunteer at our Parkinson’s boxing classes. We’ve basically created an ecosystem of like-minded folks looking to do good and feel good.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would first take a 6am boxing class with our amazing coach, Deirdre Fabian, who always brings a ton of energy. I would then hit up Young Hickory across the street for my green tea and coffee. After hanging out in Balboa Park, going to museums and the zoo, I would head back to North Park for a great lunch at Working Class. After an late afternoon yoga/meditation session at Pilgrimage of the Heart, I would treat myself to the best burgers in town at The Friendly.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shoutout to my family. When I decided to completely change careers in my mid 30s, my entire family, especially my wife, couldn’t have been more supportive. I assumed, at some point, someone would tell me I was crazy, but their confidence in me spoke volumes.
