We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Lomelin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always strive to do something I love. My interest in chocolate grew rapidly and I realized that if I could make money doing this thing I loved I could spend more and more time with it. Every day is a joy when you are doing something you love doing.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My chocolate is designed. I was a clothing designer in the fashion industry for 15 years before starting my own business. I design my chocolate the same way a line of clothing is designed. I pick colors and decor and packaging. Design inspiration boards and schedule merchandising calendars. Create spec sheets and cost sheets. Sweet Petite creates collections seasonally and for the holidays like Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day to name the top three trifecta of artisan chocolate.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, during a pandemic, I’m afraid some of those ideas would remain just that. If I was able, I would take my best friend to Little Italy and eat at our favorite, Sorrentos. Head to Coronado to explore the Hotel Del Coronado (and show her where our chocolate is sold). Hike down to the beach at the Torrey Pines Reserve and then head to one of my favorite places (and customers) the Lodge at Torrey Pines for a massage and facial. I would explore the little shops in Encinitas and lunch at Blue Ribbon Pizza. Check out Barrio Logan and Barrio Dogg (Yum!). There are so many fun shops there and beautiful cars on the weekends. Of course walk on the beach at Law Street in PB and eat breakfast at Konos.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to name two people that deserve recognition in my life. My mother Nancy and my husband Francisco. Both have been so supportive and encouraging. My mom has worked with me from the beginning in 2008. She would do anything to help me succeed. My husband is my sounding board and my rock. My entire life is seen in more vivid colors thanks to him.
