We had the good fortune of connecting with Michele Lamoureux and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michele, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking.
Risk to me is about honoring what you really want and taking a chance on yourself. I’ve always been comfortable with taking risks. I think that is because I am also comfortable with failure. To me, the idea of not trying feels more painful than having a dream and not giving it a shot. I just think “What’s the worst thing that could happen?” and that helps me realize that the stakes aren’t as high as we think they are. We can always start over or course correct.

A personal risk was moving from coast to coast. My husband and I had always dreamt of living in CA. The year we finally decided it was time, we had eight feet of snow on the roof deck of our condo in Boston! We took that as a sign it was time to give it a try. It’s not easy to leave everyone you love and start over but I didn’t want to live with the regret of a dream unfilled. That was nine years ago and we’ve been so happy in San Diego.

In 2008 I launched a podcast called The Good Life when no one was listening to podcasts the way they do now. I was 38 at the time and stopped when I became a first-time mom. I knew I loved podcasting, but the timing wasn’t right. Ten years later at 48, I decided it was time to relaunch my show. The podcast landscape had changed significantly and at first, I wondered if I was starting too late. Part of risk-taking is knowing that the negative thoughts will always be there, but to take action anyway. That was over five years ago and my show, The Good Life with Michele Lamoureux, is now a top-ranked global podcast for midlife women. I think it’s important to realize that risk-taking is a mindset shift to what’s possible. You have to be willing to take that first step and keep going from there.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a podcaster, author, and coach whose work is focused on empowering midlife women, everything I create is done with the intention of inviting women to remember what makes her special and to prioritize herself. I interview world-class experts and authors on a variety of topics including health, career, entrepreneurship, relationships, and purpose to provide my audience with actionable tips and inspiration to make positive change in her life. I am on the growth journey along with my audience.

Podcasting is like the wild-west and is always evolving. The biggest challenge I had was launching with no existing audience. There were already so many established shows with very large followings. An early challenge I faced was producing weekly content and not knowing who it was reaching or whether it was creating a positive impact. I had to stay connected to my why and to keep innovating as needed. What kept me motivated was hearing from women who discovered the show and wrote to tell me how the information shared in an episode changed their lives. It’s what keeps me going today! My show has grown so much in 5 years reaching women in over 80 countries and ranking in the top 1.5% of all podcasts globally in popularity.

I know what it is like to reinvent at different stages in life. My career began in corporate America with a great salary and senior position. It’s hard to take a leap when on paper it doesn’t make sense to make a change but if you listen to your inner voice, you’ll remember your gifts and the contributions you can make. It’s why I decided to self-publish my first book, “Design a Life You Love” and then found my way into podcasting. If you stay connected to what you desire, your path will unfold and take you to the next step. I would encourage any woman who has a dream in her heart to bet on herself and find the support she needs to make it a reality. And I invite her to join The Good Life podcast community.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many hidden gems in San Diego! I would encourage a trip to the San Diego Zoo which is one of my favorite places to visit. I would head to La Jolla to walk around and see the seals and sea lions. The Brockton Villa is a great spot for a bite to eat. For something fun and different, check out the Torrey Pines Gliderport. For a relaxing day, get a chai latte and avocado toast from Good on Ya in Encinitas and then take a walk around the corner to visit the Meditations Gardens. Once done, head south to walk the coast and enjoy the beautiful views!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My teen daughter is the inspiration for everything I do. She is a talented artist and I admire how she innovates with different artistic mediums to make a positive impact. I also want to shoutout my husband who is an entrepreneur and innovator. He was the person who said “You should start a podcast” back in 2008 and bought me my first microphone. I wasn’t even aware of podcasting back then, so I am grateful for his encouragement and helping me get started. They are my biggest supporters along with the amazing women who listen to my show.
