We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Khein and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, what do you attribute your success to?
I feel the biggest factor behind my success has always been staying true to who I am. For as long as I can remember I have always loved creating stories, and capturing moments. I love the fact that I get to capture someone’s big day and put together a small little package with a huge feeling behind it. My success comes down to truly doing this job because I love it, and not because I have to. Once you start to lose focus on that, you will fail.
What should our readers know about your business?
I feel what sets me apart is I am a one man show who is also a perfectionist. I film, edit, direct, and produce everything that I create. Even on wedding days, I don’t bring an assistant, or 2nd, or 3rd shooters. Over the years I have built a system in place where I know what and how many cameras to use, where to be, and what’s happening next – but at the same time not making it cookie cutter and generic. I try to stay true to my business name (One of a Khein Media), by curating one-of-a-kind films for my clients. I know some may say that’s a downfall – to be solo – but in my eyes, my couples hire me and fall in love with my work for what I can create. If a 2nd shooter was to miss something, or not film it correctly, that’s all on me at the end of the day. Being a solo film maker, I know what I filmed and why I filmed it, so in the long run my edits are much quicker and have more continuity because I know what to do with that footage.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to going out, I’m a simple person and if there’s some form of entertainment or fun I’m always down for a good time! I would say a fun day for me would consist of trying out local food hotspots – like a BBQ joint or something different and cool; or doing something fun like axe-throwing or cosmic bowling; or heading to a sports event. I could also keep things simple and sight-see or people-watch any day!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This might sound cheesy, but I have to shout out my wife, Genna Khein. She is also in the wedding industry, and she’s honestly the reason why I started in this field, and was my motivator to pick up a camera. She would always believe in me when I would take simple photos on my phone or create a dumb little short video of our daughter at the park. I remember she was talking about a wedding one day and it just clicked in my head that I would love to be a part of someone’s big day, and to create something for them to remember that big day. I want to give people the same feeling I had watching back our wedding film. From the very beginning, she would always refer me to her clients, friends, etc. She would always give me advice, and when I was starting off she would give me feedback on how to improve my style, and how to set myself apart. I owe a lot of my success to her, and I don’t think she knows how much I look up to her now (and then). I am so proud at how successful she is. I hope to have half of the amount of accomplishments she has had over the years.
