We had the good fortune of connecting with Mia Marie Redmond and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mia Marie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Discovering how to achieve balance fosters from situational awareness. When owning a business like Mia Marie, I find a constant need for reevaluating where I am in the growth of my business. When we first opened our tasting room, I worked almost every hour we were open. Three years later, as we continue to grow, I find I can not be physically present all the time. At this point, I strive to hire amazing individuals who embrace the Mia Marie culture and further the growth of our brand and experience. When a business grows from a few employees to 20+, a competent and dedicated team make all the difference. The most important part of my job? Cultivating a strong team with consistent leadership and open communication. I wholeheartedly believe in promoting from within and rely on my team to ensure Mia Marie runs smoothly. With two small children at home who need not only my physical but also my mental attention, a dedication to balance and prioritizing where and how time is spent proves key in nurturing both a growing business and a healthy family life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
One single idea started Mia Marie and we printed it on the back of every bottle of our wine, “Mia Marie strives to deliver a variety of craft wines in a relaxed setting. Family owned and operated, we cultivate our grapes and make our wine with a dedication to quality.” This statement proves much easier said than done. Right now, my business contains three separate parts: the vineyard, wine production, and my tasting room. All three of these parts need to run smoothly on their own as well as gel nicely together. One can not make good wine from poorly farmed fruit. A dedication to quality in farming fruit, wine production, and the overall tasting room experience facilitates a complete package in the estate winery business. Additionally, strong, brand building marketing and careful attention to detail rounds out the framework for a successful operation.
As my journey continues to unfold, mistakes and down days happen. Negativity can get to me, but tenacity always propels me forward. Over time, I learned not to take any negative feedback from someone I would not take advice from. On a more personal level, I want my kids to feel pride in what our family has created as they have witnessed the birth of our family business from its inception.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Ooohhhh – this is a fun question. I’ve lived all over San Diego, so I love all the different areas of this beautiful city. I want to focus on North East county, however, since I live here now and it deserves attention. Ok bestie, let’s start our day off at Swami’s in Escondido with their endless choices of sweet or savory delights. We then will pop by Cute Cakes to pick up some adorable cupcakes for later (put those in a cooler so no need to rush home). Next, we are off to Lake Dixon in East Escondido for a stunning hike around the edge of the water. Hungry again? Fabulous – because we have a lunch reservation at Stone Brewery! I especially love their hot honey fried chicken sandwich paired with our Mia Marie Tempranillo Rosé they feature on tap. Afterwards, we plan to visit one my favorite local wineries, Hungry Hawk. Their Albariño proves crisp and refreshing for a San Diego afternoon on the patio. Lucky for us, the Safari Park is right around the corner so we can get a bit more exercise in before landing at Mia Marie for live music in the late afternoon paired with our award winning white blend, CoBeck, and some delicious, wood-fired pizza from Cal Italia. Those Cute Cake cupcakes hit the spot as we watch the sunset. This day makes me smile just thinking about it;)
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, John Redmond, and I cultivated this dream together. We serve as a sounding board for one another along with contributing very different skill sets to our family business. Additionally, our Business Mentor, Bob Bartlett, gave us the greatest gift new business owners can receive – advice born from experience combined with reflective wisdom. Bob never shies away from holding up a mirror to us both and calling us out when we need a change in course.
