We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Rodriguez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Everything we do in this life has some sort of risk; the difference is if we’re willing to look back on those risks that didn’t work out, rather than the chances we didn’t take at all. I am a practical person, and I am always looking into the positive & negative outcomes that might come from going after certain things. But someone once told me that nothing bad ever comes from taking a risk. We learn and we grow, no matter what the outcome is.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I have always been a lover of all things creative. As a child, I used to love drawing and painting. When I became older, I was very interested in fashion and would sketch outfits in my notebooks. But during all this time of trying to find my correct creative path; I had a camera in my hand. There were a lot of road blocks, and some alternate routes that I took before I truly invested in my photography career. It was not easy, and I was met with a lot of set backs but it never deterred me from trying to follow my dream. I see the beauty in everything, and I try my best to capture that on camera. I want to capture all of the beauty that this world has to offer.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh man, where to begin! Definitely have to start the day at my favorite coffee spot, James Coffee Co. in Little Italy. I love the atmosphere inside the cafe, and the baristas are so friendly. It is the perfect way to start off any morning. If we’re going to stay in the same area, I would have to suggest having lunch at Ballast Point Brewing. The outdoor dining space is the perfect view to watch the airplanes fly over head since we’re so close to the airport. Once of my favorite beaches is over at La Jolla Cove. It’s so nice to watch the surfers and swimmers, while also getting a nice view of the sea lions basking on the sand.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to shoutout all of my family and friends who have been my biggest supporters since I started my business. They continuously show me support and are always down to help me with whatever creative projects I concoct in my head. I love them all so much and wouldn’t be where I am without them. Also, to my son, who has been my little model since the day he was born. Everything I do is for him and our future,
