We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Cage and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, why did you pursue a creative career?
I always loved art. Art is a stress relief for me. I escape into another world that is peaceful. So once I knew that I can do hair and transfer it into art, it became my passion. I love to create different styles with hair.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to do design in natural hair. What set me apart is that I don’t look as this as a job but as a passion. I love what I do. I got to where I am at today by not giving up. When things get hard for me I go harder. It was not easy opening up a BarberSalon, you have to keep pushing yourself to get where you want to be in life. You have to do the foot work, no one else will do it for you the way you want it done. You have to strive to be the best you in this business and not worry about the competition because everyone has something special in them that they can give to someone. I want the world to know is that Originality BarberSalon is a place where you can be you. We are a family salon that do not judge anyone. We love to have fun and chat on different subjects all while giving you a fly haircut or style.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I will first take them to the gaslamp district to have drinks on a rooftop bar. Than we will head to little Italy to try my favorite dish at Davinte’s. They literally have the best food in little Italy. The next day we will head to PB to ride bikes and go bar hopping. They have the best bars. After we can go the Coronado to hang out on the beach in front of hotel del coronado.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First I would like to shoutout my clients. Without them I wouldn’t be able to be creative. Second my family, they push me everyday to be better and to leave something behind for them. Third my community Nickerson Garden. People always say that the people from there will never amount to anything and I just want to let people know that the best most talented people come from the Nickerson Gardens
