We had the good fortune of connecting with Mauricio santana and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mauricio, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
My end goal is to make a living off my paintings. Even if I don’t accomplish it will continue to paint. I have to paint.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What I think sets me apart from others is my approach to painting My art is aggressive. A bit theatrical. I spend about an hour to get into the zone. Nothing exists in this zone besides me, my paints and canvas. Or whatever I can find to paint on. It’s a trance. It’s like a controlled explosion. I have no formal training which I think works for me. I have complete control and freedom. I have no rules like, “You can’t mix this with that.” I say, “Say’s who? This is art. There are no rules”. That’s why I am an artist. If I get rules put in front of me I tend to break them because frankly, rules suck. It stifles creativity. Being an artist can’t be taught. They can teach you technique and all that jazz but that doesn’t make you an artist.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I fun day in San Diego for me would be to start the day off with brunch at Encontro in north park. I would follow that with a game of disc golf at Morely Field. For a late lunch head on over to Pokez. They have great vegan food. Then some bowling at The Tavern and Bowl in East Village. To end the night just bar hop in North Park,
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many to name. Rob @connectsandiego opened the door for me allowing to me to meet so many great local artists. @dirty_619, @Chefryanrizzuto, @ladyrimusic, @ocalypse_, @jonny_chalkhands, @danieljpeters, @mcfly.nicole. In general the whole art community in San Diego. In one way, shape or form, have influenced, inspired, and/or supported me.
